Amazon.co.uk Review One Tree Hill: Season 1 marks the beginning of a genuinely engrossing series that maintains, for a long while, an unusual focus on a single, powerful conflict defining the destinies of two characters. Adolescent half-brothers Lucas (Chad Michael Murray) and Nathan (James Lafferty) Scott have lived parallel lives in One Tree, North Carolina. They share a common father, Dan Scott (Paul Johansson), who has disregarded the existence of Lucas, his son by a one-time flame, Karen (Moira Kelly), whom he dumped years before to accept a basketball scholarship to college. While neglecting Lucas, Dan--whose hoop dreams never materialized--has spent his time almost perversely micro-managing every one of Nathan's moves on and off the court at his old high school, where the lad is currently an arrogant superstar under gruff-but-wise coach Whitey Durham (Barry Corbin). Nathan (whose mother is separated from Dan) is a child of privilege and has been raised to disregard teamwork, compromise, or the feelings of others. He regards Lucas, a basketball sensation on neighborhood playgrounds, as trash, and his own girlfriend, Peyton (Hilarie Burton), as a pretty bauble he can abuse and dismiss at will. Still, he's sympathetic; one can see glimpses of the human being struggling to emerge from under Dan's control. Meanwhile, Lucas helps Karen run her café, hangs out with platonic best friend Haley (Bethany Joy Lenz), and pines for Peyton (herself a punky misfit at heart). He also turns to surrogate dad Keith Scott (Craig Sheffer)--actually his uncle and Dan's older brother--for support, and sees himself as a perpetual and doomed outsider in One Tree. All that changes when Whitey invites Lucas to join the b-ball team that Nathan dominates, a move that challenges the status quo of multiple relationships in a small community. For about a third of its episodes, this series from creator Mark Schwahn (who wrote the hit film Coach Carter) stays true to the suspense surrounding Lucas's and Nathan's changes in fortune. Then a bit of padding follows to the end of the season; there are 22 episodes to fill out, after all. But even as various distractions (a kidnapping subplot, a car accident and coma for a major character) and random events creep in (Dan, rather incredibly, takes over the team from Whitey at one point, thus coaching both his sons), One Tree Hill remains highly watchable. The writing is shaped well and organic, while performances are consistently excellent. (It's especially good to see Sheffer, perhaps best known for A River Runs Through It, again.) --Tom Keogh, Amazon.com

There's Only One Tree Hill. April 30, 2008 Stevo (UK) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I got this as a christmas gift after many hints that I wanted to see it. Whilst this season is my least favourite of the four that I have seen at the time that I'm writing this, it is still amazing. In this season they focussed a lot on basketball, sometimes a little too much for my liking but other than that it was amazing. Favourite characters in this season are definately Lucas, Brooke and Karen and for some reason I don't like Peyton in this season as much as later ones although I'm sure in rewatching it I would like her. The villain as it is through most of this season as well as others is Dan and Paul Johannson plays him so very well. I'd say that this is definately a must have. I myself had NEVER seen the show on TV and now I can't imagine not having the DVDs.
brilliant ! April 6, 2008 K.Smith 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I watched all of seasons 2,3 and 4 when it was on TV but missed alot of season 1. im glad i decided to buy season 1, it filled in a lot of gaps as you can imagine! the only bad thing about the box set is that it is highly addictive and i watched all the episodes in a very short space of time. also, watch out for the need to talk about it afterwards!
watch it! March 12, 2008 nikki (England) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
At first i wasn't really interested in watching the series but when i did i was glued to the tv and couldn't move, season 1 is full of great storylines and really does represent what teenegers go through in this day and age. so watch and enjoy it and if you like The O.C then you will love this.
There is only one! December 27, 2007 Rebecca Roberts (UK) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I watched my first One Tree Hill episode completely by accident when i was off uni with the flu. It brightened my day no end and i have been obsessed ever since. It's not as cringeworthy as Dawson's Creek and not as false as The OC. The five main characters are all so likeable, even bad bot Nate while the adults also provide grat storylines and more diversity. Some of the best humour comes from the parents and Coach 'Whitey' Durham. A legend in the making. Series one is all about developing relationships and how they are all interlinked. My favourite is the Haley/Nathan scenario as it was so unexpected My favourite character has to be Brooke though as initially she was the good time girl but throughout the series you get see more of her as she develops. Comparisons could be made to Summer (The OC) but this would be unfair to Sophia Bush as she has made Brooke an instantly loveable charcter and has a wicked sense of humour. One of my favourite episodes has to be the away game where all the girls end up in the car together while Brooke is high and Nate and Lucas end up being forced to work together to escape their rivals. Hilarious!!! I find myself identifying with every character and find it a far more intelligent teen drama when compared to it's peers.
Tree hill vs The O.C. December 4, 2007 jin kazama (Wales, UK) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
(OR RYAN vs LUCAS) I originally shied away from watching one tree hill as i was an o.c. fan and found the first season of the o.c. to be so engrossing and exciting and heartfelt that to watch tree hill felt like betrayal. But a friend of mine loved both the o.c. and tree hill and told me that tree hill was the better show. Obviously at first i just told myself that 'he didn't know what a good show was'. But after the first season of the o.c. the show never regained the 'whats-gonna happen next?' factor that made the first season so great. After watching all four seasons of the o.c. being sad and glad that it had finished (let's face it the show wasn't giving us anything new) i started watching one tree hill. I did not wan't to like this show as i was an o.c. fan. At first tree hill didn't seem special as the first episode of the o.c. was better than the first epispode of tree hill. Tree hill takes a little bit more time to get into but man it's worth it! Although i would argue the first season of o.c. is the best of any tree hill or other o.c. seasons, Tree hill definitely has a longer life span. The show does not become mediocre after season 1 but only gets stronger. I own tree hill seasons 1 to 3 on dvd and love every season and with each new season tree hill gives viewers something new and takes its characters on a wonderful different journey. Tree hill is definitely overall the better show and i can't wait to purchase seasons 4 and 5 in the future (can't wait). P.S. Lost is the best show ever!
