Amazon.co.uk Review A daffy, adorable, and very funny celebration of DIY spirit, Be Kind Rewind stars Mos Def (The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy) as Mike, a clerk at a failing video store in a rundown New Jersey neighborhood. When his friend Jerry (Jack Black), who's been magnetised in a power station accident, wipes all of the videotapes blank, the two of them decide to recreate the movies themselves rather than face the store's owner (Danny Glover). The pure charm of Be Kind Rewind can't be captured in that spare plot synopsis. The blend of the movie's great cast (which also includes Mia Farrow, Melonie Diaz of American Son, and Sigourney Weaver) and pitch-perfect writing and direction from writer-director Michel Gondry (director of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, writer-director of The Science of Sleep) culminates in a truly delightful movie--sweet without being saccharine, richly comic without irony or sarcasm (which, given the presence of Black, is surprising), sentimental without losing sight of the hard edges of life. Mos Def turns in a standout performance, deeply sympathetic without a moment of grandstanding. An absolutely winning film. --Bret Fetzer

Why are there so many films about cretins? October 9, 2008 Mr Hugh Jazz The end of this film is DREADful. In fact the whole thing is pretty garbage. Why? Because I feel like it was trendy for a while to come out with films about morons (and I am growing tired of them!!!). Napoleon Dynamite was a legendary film, as was Little Miss sunshine. I have no issue with dorks. But lots of films (and Good Lord look at MTV at the moment! The bands dress like some sort of trendy science nerds) seem to not quite nail it. Little miss Sunshine was about wierdos!- A guy who never spoke, a little girl who was mental and a manic depressant. Sure this makes for interesting content but a balance of normality provides the necessary contrast. Some films now do not provide this. What is going on!? Like all of a sudden it was cool to be a dork and dress like a dork and THEN it was cool to be autistic. Let's go one step further! Yes! You know what I mean? Tonnes of films with characters in them that are complete nerds but that's cool because to have issues and be depressed and to be a loner and to dress weird and be weird is not only fine but GRRRRRrrrreat. Thumbs up to morons! So I thought (in Be Kind) that Jack Black's friend was a little simple and so was Jack Black and so was the old man and so was the old lady etc... etc... and it was serious one sec and then reeeeediculous the next. the end. my god. i wanted to punch someone. i did like: slimer going through walls. when they were invisible on the ladder was awesome. Also when you see the little ghost that was excellent. It makes me think of the lines in the recent disappointing Ben Stiller film Tropic Thunder: Kirk Lazarus: Everybody knows you never go full retard. Tugg Speedman: What do you mean? Kirk Lazarus: Check it out. Dustin Hoffman, 'Rain Man,' look retarded, act retarded, not retarded. Counted toothpicks, cheated cards. Autistic, sho'. Not retarded. You know Tom Hanks, 'Forrest Gump.' Slow, yes. Retarded, maybe. Braces on his legs. But he charmed the pants off Nixon and won a ping-pong competition. That ain't retarded. Peter Sellers, "Being There." Infantile, yes. Retarded, no. You went full retard, man. Never go full retard. You don't buy that? Ask Sean Penn, 2001, "I Am Sam." Remember? Went full retard, went home empty handed... Nacho Libre, Anchorman, Napoleon Dynamite, Blades of Glory... these are all hilarious instant classics. But perhaps this focus on the idiot is being done to death?
very unique September 7, 2008 J Hayes (Ireland) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
This very much reminds me of a Cohen brothers film. It`s very unique and thought provoking and full of laughs.
Good premise, awful execution September 1, 2008 Sandman (London, UK) I dont know what they were thinking as they made this movie, it is dull, ponderous, lacklustre and above all not at all funny bar one or two moments in a over long film. Only reason its getting two stars is for the concept - shame they couldnt write a decent script to go with it.
Just OK August 28, 2008 Dollybird I was looking forward to seeing this and I think that they unfortunately put all he best bits in the trailer. I think the first third of the movie was good enough and I really really laughed at the Ghostbusters rip off. And got excited thinking there would be much of the same throughout the film but unfortunately for no apparent reason it turns into a homage to Fats Waller. I mean, I get why but it's like the tone of the entire film just changes halfway through and attempts to tug at the heartstrings. In a way it felt like it was 2 separate films spliced together. Shame.
Very hit and miss but on the whole I enjoyed it August 24, 2008 L. Green (London, UK) Barcode: 5060002836040 I went into this film with no idea what to expect and i'll confess the opening didn't leave a good impression on me. This film throws a lot of stuff into the mix right from the start and a fair amount of it just doesn't leave any impression on the viewer. Understandably this is supposed to be a surreal film but the jokey way Jack Black's character gets electrocuted and magnetised does stretch things a bit too far and simply seems like a means to creating the focal point to this film - that the local video store's VHS's are wiped by him being magnetised. Now, i'm not particularly a Jack Black fan and i've enjoyed most of the films i've seen him in but in Be Kind Rewind i don't think we see his best. He takes his charateristic quirkyness to the max and a fair few times it comes across as just that little bit over the top, even for him. Instead, the true star of this film is Mos Def, his humble video store clerk character Mike establishing himself as an imediately likeable everyman. And so, as the plot moves along we come to the premise that the duo begin to film their own versions of classic films. Suddenly, Be Kind Rewind becomes good and i swiftly found myself enjoying it. In essence, it works on the concept of parody which almost always will get a few laughs and to the film's credit, it does it pretty well. We then come to the third segment of the film, where the video store is faced with closure and the duo plus their legion of fans garnered from their 'sweded' films set about raising the funds to try and save it. Here, the film gets a bit 'traditional Hollywood' with a big chunk of 'all of us mucking in together for the greater good' complete with montage sequence. For a film so clearly based in comedy it's a surprisingly touching segment and adds a good touch of variety. Their are downsides to this though, this film does feel very pieced together and while there is a lot within it that works, there's also a lot that doesn't. All in all, it's a fun movie to watch over an evening and a good one for watching with the family too. Don't go into it expecting a masterpiece, it's a nice slice of simple fun, a slightly above-average comedy that succeeds enough to leave you feeling satisfied.
