Amazon.co.uk Review Is there a finer medical programme on television right now than House? Sure, ER continues to grab the attention and acclaim, but even a powerhouse show such as that doesn't have such an ingenious creation at the heart of it as Hugh Laurie's award-winning Dr Gregory House. The premise of House centres each episode around a diagnostic challenge for the blunt, brilliant, rude and unconventional Doctor and his team. The investigations into the various ailments even have a pseudo-CSI feel to them, generally set against the time-pressure of a rapidly degenerating patient. Yet while the medicine enthrals, House is all about the characters. The superb supporting cast, including Omar Epps, Robert Sean Leonard and Lisa Edelstein, of long-suffering colleagues and staff are strong, providing the nucleus of a fair few story threads themselves. Yet it's Hugh Laurie's astonishing performance in the title role that makes it all work. In Laurie's hands, Dr Gregory House becomes one of the most memorable television characters of recent times, replacing snide comments and sarcasm at a point where a calm bedside manner would be far more appropriate. Across the three seasons in this terrific boxset, therefore, he makes more than his fair share of enemies, including a police detective intent on sending him down and a patient or two who look to exact some form of revenge. Anchored by razor-sharp writing, House is, undoubtedly, a major success and a highly enjoyable television programme. And with over 60 episodes to enjoy here, this collection of the first three seasons is a terrific investment. --Simon Brew

House Rules July 19, 2008 Patrick Mullane (Cork, Ireland) The key character of this series, House, would not win any carer of the year awards, but as a television drama it excels as compelling medical drama. I enjoyed the three seasons, with the development of the supporting characters, the disease de jour episode format and the irascible acting of Mr. Laurie who infuses House with mordant wit and a cutting sarcasm. It is enjoyable as well to see how the writers link the main characters with a certain Mr. Doyle earlier creation: i.e. House/Wilson & Holmes/Watson. Finally whilst the price of the DVD set is excellent, the extra features are fairly non-existent
WHY NO SUBTITLES ? July 19, 2008 Martin (London, England) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I am Sooooo angry, I have been watching, and enjoying enormously, the repeats of House season 2 every day Channel 5, and then season 3 on Thursday evenings on 5 US. As I am hard of hearing and the dialogue is sometimes fast and technical, I always have the sub-titles turned ON. So can you imagine how I felt when I received this box set of Series 1, 2 & 3 for 35 GBP to find there are NO Bleeping Subtitles. I should have read all the Amazon reviews before I bought it. Thanks Universal, great job, at the bottom of the back cover, in tiny print, it says SUBTITLE TRACKS and then in an even smaller font NONE. Good job I've recorded most of the repeats with the sub titles included. No wonder people download bootlegs.
One of the best TV programmes made recently March 8, 2008 T. G. King (Warwick, UK) 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
If you're a casual viewer of House with Hugh Laurie, I definitely advise you to buy this box set and set aside a weekend for some excellently crafted viewing. I'd only seen the odd episode before buying this, and upon doing so found an addiction normally the reserve of narcotics users! It's a good cast, though odd at first to see 'Billy from Neighbours' in it, but Laurie stands out as usual. The dryer than dry wit and razor sharp sarcasm never gets tiring (though the word 'lupus' does!). Unlike with other similar programmes, they aren't afraid to change how they are perceived in House, though they do stick to the same plot outline for most episodes. It's kept fresh by House's never ending barrage of insults and put downs which are carried off effortlessly by Laurie. Buy it, would be my advice!
A must have for fans of quality entertainment February 27, 2008 L. M. Kenyon (Corby, Northants United Kingdom) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
Watched the 3 series on TV and have now bought this set. Absolutely one of the best TV programmes of this century (and probably the last). Well written, well acted and with enough pace to keep any enthralled. Well worth the money.
