It’s a very welcome return for The Tudors in this terrific second season of the show, which picks up once more on the earlier years in the reign of King Henry VIII. And once again, it pulls few punches, by turns violent, passionate and dramatic. It’s absolutely not family viewing, but it does grab you by the collar and simply not let up.

What’s more, The Tudors is once again powered by arguably a career-defining performance by Jonathan Rhys-Meyers. He’s quite superb as the young King, capturing the obsession of Henry VIII in his quest for a male heir to the throne. He’s matched by a strong supporting cast, too, particularly Natalie Dormer’s Anne Boleyn. And with lavish production values grounding the show, it’s a sumptuous, surprisingly edgy slice of historical drama.

That said, once again, the show takes some liberties with history, and inevitably attracts attention for doing so. But those liberties are taken for a reason. The drama is never less than compelling, and it’s worth cutting The Tudors some slack for the decisions it makes. After all, the end result is genuinely gripping and engaging television, and come the final credits on the ten episodes here, chances are you’ll be thirsting for more. For even though you may know how the story ultimately ends, The Tudors is ample proof that the journey there is really what matters. --Jon Foster

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful   November 14, 2008

As a history student in her final year at university, I can well understand why those who have a passion for history, and its accurate portrayal, may have problems with the liberties taken here. However, it's important to remember that Henry VIII was not always fat and old, especially during this period! In fact, in some of the very final scenes of the series, we can see how he will probably progress into being this more typical version, and I for one cannot wait to see if they can pull this transition off. The important thing to remember is that this is a tv show; not even a documentary, and therefore has not got an obligation to be 100 per cent factual all of the time, but to be entertaining for the audience. And anything that makes people who normally wouldn't be interested in history want to know more after they've finished viewing, has to have my vote.

5 out of 5 stars great stuff   November 7, 2008

Yes it's a bit over the top and stretches the truth a bit. However, what a great romp. As for Jonathan Rhys Meyers being too good looking,I would like to remind the "historians" that Henry was once considered to be the "Golden Prince", and described as the most handsome in all of Europe.
It was only after his leg became too bad for him to ride and play sports did he become obese.

What a travesty - history? What history? You might as well call the carry on movies history. Apart from that the acting is on a par with hollyoaks - all that trying so hard to be sexy - laughable. If you want to see great acting and some semblance of historical accuracy watch man of all seasons, or anne of a thousand days, and see how far tv/movies have dumbed down in forty or so years. I feel insulted that this rubbish is supposed to appeal to me, I'm not that stupid.

5 out of 5 stars Spellbinding - I was glued to this, again!   October 25, 2008

I love this series. Accurate or not, it is compelling and fascinating. I think all of the characters are fantastic, and you feel what they're feeling, and almost feel a part of the action. After the first series of The Tudors I knew that much of the second series wouldn't be a surprise to me as Anne Boleyn's demise is one of the most famous parts of Henry VIII's story. However, I was still hanging on to every word, and every action throughout.

I was starting to grow a little tired of Catherine of Aragon by the beginning of this series, but (spoiler alert!) her death scene was incredibly touching, and I cried a little tear. I was almost sorry to see her go. However, her death then paved the way for a great deal more scandal and action - as the King was now free to marry Anne Boleyn.

I don't want to say too much as I'll be giving away loads, although if you're familiar with this period in history it's likely you'll know the majority of what is going to happen. Obviously the writers have used creative licence with the "facts" but the big things happening in that time were all included. One thing that fascinated me was the changeability of the king. I wonder if it's true how flighty he was? How he could love a woman so deeply that he was prepared to change the world for her, then when she failed to give him a son, completely turn against her and go back to his womanising ways? And also go from worshipping his daughters, to pushing them aside when he was no longer enamoured with their mothers? I know it was the way back then that women would just "put up and shut up" but I'd love to know if he really was that brutal and uncaring?

The only times when Henry seemed to show any emotion (other than lust!) were when he learned of Catherine's death, and when he felt obliged to go through with having Thomas More executed. Otherwise, he's portrayed as a cold-hearted, selfish man... which makes you wonder, did all his women really fall for him, or did they, like Anne Boleyn, crave power and riches?

As with the first series, I was glued to the screen from start to finish - and despite knowing what the grand finale would be, I was still on the edge of my seat. There's an awful lot of emotion in this series, and also some really gruesome torture scenes. It's certainly not family viewing, but I think those into these dramas will love it. Unless you're so deeply into history that you'll pick it to pieces because of inaccuracies. I'm a bit of a history bod (though not this particular period), but I just took it for what it was and thought it was fantastic. Bring on series 3! I could easily watch this until Henry gets through all of his wives!

5 out of 5 stars Great - but don't bother with the extra features!   October 22, 2008

Yes, there are some historical innacuracies but it makes little difference to the enjoyment of this hugely watchable and brilliantly done drama - due to all concerned, it's quality stuff.
The only thing that lets it down in my opinion, as a DVD, is the poor extra features offering. For some inexplicable reason these features start with several very short snippets starring 3 Americans, of all people, who waffle on offering empty opinions or stating the bleeding obvious whilst insisting on calling them 'the Too-derrrs' throughout! CUT!
Peter O'Toole's own contribution is fine but is marred rather by an extremely patronising American woman doing a voiceover....yee gads! Give those a miss but as for the series, I loved it and wait eagerly for the next instalment. And Henry not putting on enough weight? This is still early in his reign...we're only on wife number 2....and hey - were any of us actually there???
