Panned, scanned and damned August 29, 2008 Scottie (London) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
A potentially fabulous box set is scuppered by the fact (as pointed out by other reviewers) that four of the films - The Birds, Marnie, Torn Curtain and Topaz - are presented in completely the wrong aspect ratio, despite information to the contrary on the boxes themselves. The upshot is that anyone who buys this set, tempted by the admittedly wonderful extra features, will still have to buy widescreen (Region 1) versions of these films if they want to see them in a form even approximating to what Hitchcock intended. How ridiculous. They might just as well have colorised Psycho while they were at it.
WHA?! August 16, 2008 Mark C. Danzig lll (Seattle, WA United States) these box sets were released the same month in both US-UK-- US 15 discs,(bonus) UK 14 (and not only in 1:33 as Amazon.us mistakenly reports) yet the US box has a completely restored, new 16x9 Anamorphic transfers of THE BIRDS, VERTIGO, & PSYCHO, MARNIE (my essentials) and all the rest are restored and in original aspect ratios-16x9 when applicable Have Universal UK no scruples? pure insult to their buying public (My rating is for the USA MASTERPIECE BOX) for a laugh-and then rage-stick one of those 3 into your PC/Mac and open up on desktop; put open folder into "list view"you will see VOB files and VTS_Video files and their creation dates. If they are the recycled discs from 2001 (?) ie before 2005, Then I'd take a brick, tape it to the box and toss it through Universal UK front Office Window
Stellar box set from the master of suspense August 10, 2008 D. Tranter (England) Within this set are some of the greatest movies ever produced in the history of motion pictures. 'Rear Window', a story of a photographer who believes he has witnessed a murder, if only people would believe him, is Hitch's tour de force, capturing the essence of the mans film making technique. 'Psycho' is a well known piece of shock that still resonates 50 years after it first terrified audiences. 'Vertigo' a whirling masterpiece that rewards repeated viewings. 'Rope' an 80 minute claustrophobic piece that harks back to the Leopold and Loeb case of early 20th century Chicago. 'Marnie' and 'The Birds' are classic late Hitchcock. There are a couple of duds, notably 'Topaz' and 'Frenzy' but for 17.99 its almost a steal, so treat yourself to a cinematic education, invest in the master.
Completely restored films!! February 6, 2008 sandiann (UK) 10 out of 10 found this review helpful
Better quality than the originals.Bonus features show how the complete restoration from film was achieved to produce much sharper images and colours than the cinema showings. With a couple of notable omissions from the line up this is the best box set of Hitchcock I have seen. Well worth purchasing .
Beware - Not all films in correct ratio January 3, 2008 Gideon Rigal (London, UK) 32 out of 38 found this review helpful
While this should be a marvelous box set with some very fine Hitchcock films and terrific documentaries included, potential customers should note that several of the films that should be in widescreen are presented here in 4:3 pan and scan versions. The Birds for instance is advertised on the cover as being in widescreen when it isn't. If however you don't mind seeing the films like this, then the box set probably offers good value.
