1 out of 5 stars BEWARE!!!   October 7, 2008

This is just awful!!! I understand that, perhaps for a media student project, there might be some merit in it but as a commercial DVD this is a turkey!!!

My biggest gripe is that the cover of the DVD shows the "Monster" clearly and throughout the entire film there is nothing like the clarity of that image seen! In other words the cover is classic "bait and switch" and that's cheating in my book.

1 out of 5 stars MONSTER...WASTE OF MONEY AND TIME   September 20, 2008
Creature Feature (United Kingdom)
Thrill - to jerky cameras to simulate earthquakes that have no effect on desk ornaments or wall plaster...

Chill - to the odd squeaky noises made by the non-existent beast...

Scream!!! - as you realise you will never get the time back after watching this risible junk. I make allowances for low budget, and have a few monster movies on my DVD shelf which I return to for an hour and a half of no-brainer fun. I even love the creaky old It Came From Beneath The Sea. None of these had blockbuster budgets, but they were made with a passion and charm and respect for the material.
This is the worst kind of exploitative piddle. It's not a cheeky but honest homage to Cloverfield. It's a steaming mound. This is out to take your money without a serviceable B-picture in return. When a vague, fuzzy tentacle appears briefly in the background you'll beconvinvced you're watching a giant sock puppet.
The cover of the DVD suckered me in. Don't let it happen to you. Don't pay a quid for it, don't borrow it off a friend or even watch it for nowt if it rolls around on TV. You'll begrudge the cost of the electricity to power your TV set to watch this farce.
Just print out the picture of the cover, jiggle it around a bit, maybe scream once or twice, and you'll have more fun. You'll also have made the sequel but with an improved story and effects.

3 out of 5 stars MONSTER!   September 7, 2008

Monster is a good film but it would be better if the camera would stop shaking because I could hardly make out what was happening.
I know it was all on a camcorder but I couldn't understand what was happening thanks to the terrible camera shaking.

Other wise it was a good film.
Don't hesitate to buy it.

3 out of 5 stars Monster is a little gem that popped up out of nowhere.   August 7, 2008

By now, everyone's probably heard of the 'Blair Witch' genre, and everyone's probably heard of Cloverfield... Monster is ultimately a very low-budget version of Cloverfield.

First off: No. Monster is not perfect. The previous reviewer seems to have watched it expecting something mainstream: something that's been a hit at the cinema and everything. I'm not saying that the previous reviewer is wrong: His one star rating would probably be accurate if Monster had been made on the same budget as Cloverfield. Fact is: It wasn't.

The almost non-existent plot focuses on two American sisters as they travel to Japan in order to create a documentary on global warming. Before you've had time to properly get comfortable on the sofa... there's an enormous explosion down-town which everyone immediately assumes is an earthquake... 'Except it wasn't an earthquake.' (As the trailer states!) It is in fact a gigantic, squid-like creature which has come up from under the ground. It has a massive appetite, and a really bad temper! Cue lots of running, lots of screaming and lots of explosions.

I am giving Monster a three star rating, considering:

Budget: Lighthouse DVD Distribution, as you may already know, make all these straight-to-DVD horror B-movies (i.e. Transmorphers, 100 Million Years BC etc...) They use all the cheapest cameras, editing facilities, special effects programs... everything is basically done on the tiniest budget you can imagine.

Actors / Actresses: Lighthouse DVD Distribution neither has the kind of budget to employ even the most remotely `known' actors / actresses. All the acting is done by volunteers with a passion. This is, (For example: Brad Pitt.) the way in which most acting celebrities begin their careers.

The Time In Which It Was Made: Lighthouse DVD Distribution apparently give their film-makers a maximum of five months to complete the whole production. And, being a media student, I admire how they manage- as making short films myself (20-25 minutes) take a similar amount of time!

I hope that the previous reviewer goes back and watches Monster a second time with all this in mind. Remember: `Flaws' aren't particularly `mistakes'.

Another thing I admired about Monster, was that it's clearly been well thought through. As mentioned by the previous reviewer, the film-makers resorted to making the footage 'damaged', to avoid a heck of a lot of mistakes they could've made. This is like 'killing two birds with one stone', as it covers up any possible mistakes, and also makes the film seem more 'real'.

Yet another thing I admired about Monster, was its ability to create an epic and almost apocalyptic atmosphere- not by (i.e. Cloverfield) using spectacular visual effects, but by using constant chaotic background noise: Alarms, people shouting and screaming, explosions, crashes... like reading a book, Monster leaves most of what is going on for your own imagination; for your own interpretation.

One last admiration: I loved the powerful political ending. It gave off the perfect global warming `danger message'.

At the end of the day, as stated, Monster is a low-budget clone of Cloverfield. The acting is passable; the effects aren't the best- but you hardly see them anyway; the editing is fantastic and the direction avoids any obvious mistakes. No, this is not as good as Cloverfield, nor The Blair Witch Project, but all things considered, Monster makes for a very reasonable night in.

Well worth a look if you find it somewhere for a few quid.

1 out of 5 stars Can't believe I endured this rubbish!   June 24, 2008

Speaking of rubbish, that Blair Witch idea has a lot to answer for! Shaky, supposedly 'real' home movie footage of events which is then passed off as fact, is so passé now, I can't believe people are still attempting to pull this off, especially when the result is as dire as this one! I don't believe I have ever given just one star to any movie as I always try to see the positive in most things and try not to say anything at all if I can't say something nice, but I feel I must make an exception for this.
I imagine it's a low budget copy of the idea behind "Cloverfield" (though I haven't seen that yet) and is so poorly done and so dismal I'm amazed it ever got given a dvd release.
The two women who are whom the 'story' is based around are so obviously acting and aware of it and so fake and uninteresting in every way that it was extremely tedious trying to stick this out 'til the end. That, coupled with the shaky, dodgy camerawork, no doubt deliberately dodgy in attempts to cover up the fact that nothing much was actually happening and they couldn't afford much in the way of effects, so the frequent black screen, pixelated picture, almost constant lines of interference, and other assorted unwatchable attempts used to convey a supposedly real filming of events, was all done to mask what really was being filmed, namely just normal life in a normal street scene in any big city, in this case, Tokyo, and if they thought that making the picture barely watchable was meant to be convincing that the events really were taking place and they were running for their lives, hence dodgy picture from shaky hand held camera, then they must think that anyone watching must be stupid. And, seeing as I sat through this endurance test for one and a half hours, I'm thinking that I must be!
If the events had been real, then the person doing the filming would have filmed events other than a bit of smoke coming from buildings and a fake looking octopus type monster waving its tentacles around, but the sister doing the filming, (though they took turns) preferred to focus mainly on her sister instead of the supposed exciting events taking place all around them! Again, obviously this was to cover up the lack of budget, if not it was extremely pretentious but ultimately naive attempts at making events look 'real'. If so, they didn't pull it off. There wasn't even anyone in it worth feasting your eyes on to make it more worthwhile from an eye candy point of view. There were a couple of cute young Japanese guys, one we saw briefly before he got killed in the back of a van they sheltered in, and another one in a light grey hoody, who we saw even less of but who did look really cute, so even more black marks to the filmmakers who could at least have made this dire effort more watchable by getting some decent close ups of these cute guys, but no, even that opportunity was passed over in favour of pretentious nonsense. It was only one pound in a discount shop, but even so, I still feel like I should ask for my money back! At least I can have a good old moan about it here on Amazon and warn others about how bad it is!
I got fooled by the picture on the cover of the dvd, showing giant tentacles encircling a tower building, but you don't get to see that anywhere in the movie, it's obviously just cover art that they've used to try and make it look as though it's a scene from the movie. It certainly isn't! It is on the cover to make you think you'll see it in the film, so don't be fooled by that if you see the dvd lurking in some discount store, even if it's only a penny, it's not worth it, it isn't even good in a bad way, not even funny, it's just awful.
