better than the hostels October 29, 2008 A. fordham (uk) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
for a start this film started out with a little more acton than the hostel films,i.e no 40 minute character building until the killings. oh no, once they get to where they want to go the fun starts, ok it is a bit few and far between, as in gore, blood,etc.. but as the flm is quite long it keep the thrills going until the end. expect lots of blood, toe curling scenes, heads blown off, table saws etc.. yes, if you thought hostel 1 or 2 was good, you aint seen nothing yet, id say its 80% hostel,20%manhunt and 10% the descent, f,y,i manhunt is a game. it just reminds me of it in some parts. go for it if you love people getting killed!!! yay!!
Incredible film. Loved it. October 17, 2008 D. Jackson (UK) 10 out of 10 found this review helpful
Frightfest banned it, Optimum didn't know whether to release it or not, the critics weren't keen, but one thing's for sure: We LOVE it! The makers of Switchblade Romance have done it again! Frontiers is possibly an even more powerful 'endurance test' than last year's remake of Funny Games. Ultimately, Frontiers is made for you to pause the film for a second, take a deep breath and ask yourself, 'Why am I still watching this?' The story plays out just like your average Friday night horror flick: A group of kids get into some trouble whilst rioting at the latest presidential election... soon enough, after deciding to take a run for it, they all end up staying at a creepy old hostel run by a large family of uncompromising Nazi cannibals... ...And thank God! For once! It's as good as it sounds! Beautifully shot, expertly crafted and brilliantly acted, Xavier Gens -director of the more recent Hitman- has served up for us something quite special: Frontiers is a shocking, brutal, emotionally draining and immensely powerful piece of horror cinema. It demands to be seen, and at this price it's hard to resist! (P.S- To those who are frightened of subtitles: It's French. Also: Stunning cover art!)
enjoyable horror but nothing outstanding October 14, 2008 Mr. N. D. Havers (Liverpool) 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
This film was kinda a cross between a modern texas chainsaw massacre and hostel. The first 45 minutes of the film are really good. There's alot of action and suspense but after that the film seems to lose its way a bit. I think the problem with this film is most of the characters are killed off within the first half of the film, leaving the 2nd half of the film largely focusing on the remaining survivor and cannibal family. I'd give this film 7/10. Its worth a watch but its not outstanding or anything different to some of the other modern horror films available.
A FRENCH-MADE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE October 12, 2008 Lou Almighty 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
French-made horror-thrillers are becoming modern it seems. After the excellent "Haute Tension" (Switchblade Romance in the UK) came "L'Interieur" (Inside) and then "Frontier(s)". Frontier(s)'s theme is very similar to that of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre films - only even more intense. The violence is a lot more graphic and shocking - probably due to the fact that the censorship is not as strict as in the US. Instead of a family of rednecks a group of Nazis are the villains here. I found it rather hard to find sympathy for the teens being tortured and eventually killed. They are a group of criminals on the run which I didn't feel sorry for at all. And this seems to be the film's biggest problem. You don't really care for any of the characters and you just watch to see them die. Otherwise a quite atmospheric and well-made horror thriller
Brilliant! August 16, 2008 F. Brown (uk) 4 out of 6 found this review helpful
If there is one horror film you should buy this year it should be frontiers, havnt watched a horror film like this in a while! there is some decent gore and a great plot and some great eery locations, i definatly agree with the other reviewer that it is definatly based on hostel, if you liked switchblade romance youll love this! but is hard to say which is the better of the two, but there is one thing i can say, go out and buy it you wont be dissapointed!
