5 out of 5 stars Runs on Region 2 (Europe) DVD players   September 24, 2008
Peter Kreft (Siegen, Germany)
There has been said enough about this truly magnificent movie, so I only want to post a technical remark.

I received the DVD yesterday and it works perfectly well on my Region 2 DVD player.

Interesting enough the movie started with Japanese language (Text and subtitles) activated, so I think it recognized the region settings of my player and switched automatically to Japanese (region 2).

5 out of 5 stars RELEASE ON REGION 2 ...OR ELSE, I'LL PASS THE PARCHMENT!!!   July 10, 2008

I've got this on VHS, and I'm unsure whether to buy this DVD, despite the previous reviewer's comment that it plays on Region 2 players.
This is 2 x cuts of the SAME movie, Night is Uncut, Curse has about 13 minutes missing (can't see the point of including the cut print, myself).
A film of this reputation surely demands a legitimate Region 2 release!
Someone, somewhere - get it sorted soon!
As for the film, I can only endorse all the reviews here; simply THE best black & white horror movie of all time (and better for it!). Indeed, one of the greats, full stop!
Stunning atmosphere, locations & cinematography. Taut direction, and a lesson in editing!
The Demon FX are kept to a minimum, mostly letting the imagination do the work, but the giant Demon itself is impressive for 1957!
Great acting all round, and good face offs between Dr Holden (Dana Andrews) and the wonderfully sinister Julian Karswell (Niall MacGinnis).
So many classic scenes; the children's party at the Karswell estate that turns VERY stormy, Dana Andrews' nocturnal walk through a bedevilled wood, the Demon's first vicious attack, the first meeting of Holden & Karswell..
An absolute masterclass of occult cinema.
And how can any film fail that opens with such atmospheric shots of Stonehenge!! (Bit like the Standing Stones in the ITV drama, Children Of The Stones).

In the words of Julian Karswell, "You Get Nothing For Nothing"...

5 out of 5 stars The best british horror film of all time!   May 9, 2008

Night of the Demon is quite simply the best horror film that Britain has ever produced. From the opening shot of a very creepy Stonehenge, the fabulously eerie introduction about the 'demons of hell' to the nailbitingly monstrously good ending it just piles on the suspense. There are classic scenes , which stay in the memory like the clown's picnic, the seance and most notably the smoke in the trees along with the steaming hoof-prints! The monster is breathtaking, the best of any film and unlike many horror flicks we get to see it in all its drooling glory early on. Like all the great british horror classics such as The Haunting and Dead of Night it is in black and white, oozes gothic atmosphere, has great acting and uses our old biuldings and countryside to great effect. Miss this film at your peril!

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic horror film and don't worry about the region code   December 31, 2007

The only thing I can add is that I bought this and it plays just fine on my region 2 only DVD player. I have found that quite often DVD's from the USA don't seem to be region coded despite saying region 1 on the box. No guarantees that your copy will be region 0 but mine does seem to be.

5 out of 5 stars my favourite film of all time   December 26, 2007

there are many qualities to the film:

1. the atmosphere is perfect - eerie, credible, shocking
2. the plot follows a track in a logical sequence without holes or gaffs
3. the acting is second-to-none - dana andrews in fine sceptical form, peggy cummins the perfect piece of totty, niall maginnis the sinister foil
4. the photography, often overlooked, but here it's gorgeous
5. the music - actually quite brutal and effective
6. the direction - perfect, absolute perfection - show me any modern horror film which manages to intrigue, shiver or shock like this one manages to. you'll have a hard job
7. the golden test: can you watch this film again and again? yes. i have done so many times and it still remains fresh.

watch this film. you will love it.
