A Treasure! September 10, 2008 RickyT (United Kingdom) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
Will Hay deserves to be remembered far more keenly than he currently is. He was a wonderful comic actor, and these films show him at his best. Oh Mr Porter was one of the influences on Dad's Army, and the style and spirit of Will's work inspired many other actors and writers. This box set is a real treasure trove for lovers of classic comedy.
Class on a Stick May 21, 2008 M. Boost (England) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I always ways thought thirties comedians appearing in films were grinning idiots with a delivery so slow that I genuinely believed I had prophetic qualities. But Will Hay is a revelation. His creation of the incompetent rogue in official positions where he can't quite cut it and thus creates illicit means to stay in office (and make a few bob) are laugh-out-loud's. Take his bodged speed-trap in "Ask a Policeman." The dialogue moves at the rate of knots and the films have none of the insipid sentimentality which jars many movie comedies of the time. "Ask a Policeman" and "Oh Mr. Porter" are gems.
Just wonderful September 16, 2007 "Smith" Reader (West Midlands United Kingdom) 3 out of 6 found this review helpful
There is so much I could write - Will Hay and his team are just so funny, Oh Mr.Porter has to me the best film ever! I could go on but please please if you buy this DVD pack you will not be just as thrilled as I am!
b&w nostalgia on tap August 14, 2007 Gary J. Clark (London) 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
I first saw Will Hay films when I was about 10 (circa. 1980) when they used to show old B&W comedies on TV (the likes of George Formby, Mother Riley, Norman Wisdom, Abbott & Costello, etc). I saw them all again about ten years ago and pleased to find that the years hadn't made the trio of Hays, Marriott and Moffat any less amusing, have been watching them repeatedly ever since. "Oh Mr. Porter" and "Ask a Policeman" are amongst the very best of British comedies, and must certainly be two of the best pre-war British films. Unfortunately, without Marriott/Moffat, Will Hay isn't half as good.
Excellent October 1, 2006 Sanibla (UK) 28 out of 28 found this review helpful
Brought back memories of Saturday afternoons watching TV as a lad. Will Hay still doesn't disappoint. Ideal for watching on a long winters day in front of a roaring fire!
