Very Disturbing And Spooky July 31, 2007 Scott Fraser (Sheffield, England) 22 out of 24 found this review helpful
This was transmitted in two parts in England in 2006 and was one of the television highlights of the year. The basic plot is the re-appearance of a British submarine that was lost and sunk in World War 2, the only survivor is recruited by the admiralty to attempt to discover what happened to the rest of the crew and how the submarine resurfaced. After boarding the sub the investigation team begin to take on characteristics of the original crew and their ultra secret mission, to destroy a top secret target in Russia and set sail to complete this task that was set in motion 65 years previously. The drama is a mix of a ghost story coupled with science fiction and is very reminiscent of Sapphire and Steel in dealing with the past pushing through into the present, the idea that the submarine's original crew cannot settle until the last survivor's soul joins them is quite disturbing and spooky. David Jason has proved on many occasions that he is a talented straight actor and not just known for comedy and I would go so far as to say that this is his best ever straight performance in a drama, he is sensational. David Jason himself suggested this be made into a drama after reading the novel that it is based upon and convinced a production company to make it and he was very surprised when they asked him to play the lead and what a great choice it was too. In short this is a wonderful drama and well worth a look.
