Editorial Reviews:

Amazon.co.uk Review
As light and frothy as the Vivienne Westwood wedding gown that's an unofficial fifth star, the film version of Sex and the City is both captivatingly stylish and sweetly sentimental. Viewers who loved hanging with Carrie Bradshaw and her three pals during the series' TV run will feel as though no time has passed. Except that it has: Carrie and Big are poised to make a Big Commitment; Miranda and Steve are facing the breakup of their wonderful family; Charlotte and Harry have added to their brood; and Samantha (are we sitting down?) has been devoted to hunky Smith for five full years. Still, in all that time, the women's style, conviviality, and appetite for bons mots have only grown. When practical attorney Miranda learns that Carrie is considering moving in with Big (in possibly the coolest apartment in Manhattan), she can't help but frown in that but-you-might-lose-everything way. Carrie's retort: "For once, can't you feel what I want you to feel--jealous?!"

The cast is spot-on, as always. Sarah Jessica Parker is effortless as the angst-ridden yet practical, stylish yet vulnerable Carrie. Kim Cattrall is deliciously decadent as Samantha, but she's wiser now and knows herself and her needs for a real relationship. Kristin Davis, as Charlotte, has quietly become the most gorgeous among the beauties, her sleek presence both winsome and sophisticated. And Cynthia Nixon (Miranda) shows nuance as a woman torn between betrayal and grudging hope. Supporting roles include Candice Bergen as the Vogue editor who anoints Carrie "The Last Single Girl in New York," and Jennifer Hudson, as a starry-eyed, ambitious romantic who represents the new generation of SATC women. Through it all, New York is a benevolent cocoon that envelopes and nurtures the women and their friendships and careers. No matter that none of them appears to have any semblance of "real" family; as long as they have each other, and Manhattan, all will be right with their world. --A.T. Hurley

5 out of 5 stars A Cynic Converted!   October 9, 2008
Amanda Low (Dundee, Scotland)
I have never watched a single episode of Sex And The City on tv, the whole concept and format of the show just didn't appeal to me, so when my mother in law asked me to go to the cinema to see the film, I was somewhat reluctant to go. However I went and was absolutely glued to the screen from start to finish!! The film was excellent and I felt that you didn't have to know anything from the tv series to watch it. Definetely a girls night in film with a bottle of wine and some tissues!

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing and, well, a bit depressing   October 9, 2008
Glamour Girl (UK)
OK, it's a tired way to start the review, but I LOVED the series and was really looking forward to the movie - and, like a lot of other people, found it very disappointing. Mainly because it just wasn't that funny. The script lacked the wit and humour of the series. Whereas there were some great laugh-out-loud moments in the TV show, the film barely raised a smile from me. While the series made some very witty commentary on women in modern life, the film was just a bit schmultzy.

There was also far too much prancing around in outfits - wedding dresses, then trying on clothes when Carrie's leaving her apartment. It felt like fillers to make it movie-length. The girls' meeting up seemed quite contrived - with Samantha forever popping back to New York for some spurious reason. And the Louis-from-St Louis thing - how dull! Could not have cared less if Jennifer Hudson got together with her Louis. I appreciate the scriptwriters were trying to make a connection with the young, single girl in NY, but it fell flat for me. Again, felt like a filler.

And maybe it's just me, but I left the cinema feeling, well, a bit depressed. There was none of the feel-good factor that came from the series. If you want to see a good rom-com, I'd advise watching How To Lose A Guy in Ten Days instead. Or just re-watch the series.

4 out of 5 stars Sex aand the Cirty   October 2, 2008
Ms. E. L. Parnell (UK)

Some of it was boring n cringeworthy but seeing the girls again was gr8 n watching the moral support displayed for Carrie after being jilted by Big was awesome. She was in Mexico on what was meant to be her honeymoon in bed..erm alone!

Bought it last week n watched it twice already!!

4 out of 5 stars It kinda got me to thinking................LOVED IT   October 2, 2008

Fans of the original show that have written negative reviews of the film obviously haven't watched any episodes recently. I admit that there is a major amount of product placement and some of the characters don't get enough time in the film (there is only a limited amount of time!!)but on the whole this film follows the format of the TV show. I have just finished re-watching the first season and all they way through Carrie is overwhelmed with anxiety about her relationship with BIG. And here we are...so many years later..... and the film is about Carrie's heartache over BIG. Samanatha's storyline suits her character from the TV series. In fact, the line she says to Smith 'I love me more than you' is used in series five when she breaks up with Richard! Charlotte and Harry's plot is included to show the happiness some people manage to find and to contrast with Carrie and Miranda's sadness. Miranda's storyline is brilliantly done. Please please ignore the negative reviews if you loved the TV series.....really this is more of the same excellent SATC.

3 out of 5 stars A Fairy Tale   October 2, 2008

Unlike the most excellent series, this is a comedy without the comedy, one liners, dating insight and philosophy that we are used to.

It's good to see the girls once again but only serves the ultimate closure with fairy tale endings for all concerned.
