Classy, innovative and impeccably produced and acted October 30, 2008 Oscar Del Santo (San Sebastian, Spain) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Whilst to Miss Marple fans stuck in the past this new series may be represent some sort of betrayal, open-minded viewers will find these four stories impeccably acted and very well produced. Retaining that unmistakable British touch, the new Miss Marple manages to be faithful to the original while reinventing many of the characters and situations to suit our modern taste. A real treat.
Could be worse ! October 25, 2008 Mr. Mg Reynolds (Oxfordshire UK) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Agatha Christie's Poirot - Collection 7 [2008 It was worth buying this just to see Towards Zero & Ordeal By Innocence on the small screen ! They are both pretty good episodes as it is interesting to see the skill of the script writers shoehorning Miss Marple into adaptations when she was not in the original book . Others who have never read non Marple Christie books are amazed to see them as Marple TV shows only to find that she was not in novels like Zero & Innocence ! The writers are clever with these two shows as they feel no need to add some trite lesbian sub plot which I suspect has less to do with equality and more to do with exciting some unfortunate thoughts in the minds of some viewers . Sex sells I fear ! At Bertrams & Nemesis are of necessity different to the Joan Hickson adaptations as to just have given us the same again would not have aroused much interest . Society has moved on since Joan Hickson packed it in in 1992 and so to keep the punters watching writers have to be a bit flexible as a result. Geraldine McEwan is certainly better as Miss Marple than Angela Lansbury - but fans of Murder She Wrote should enjoy this series as Miss Marple and Mrs Flecther certainly have much in common . The celebrities are out in force as everyone from Johnny Briggs & Jane Seymour seems to turn-up - even dear old George Cole & Martine McCutcheon crop up with Paul Nicholls and Francesca Annis to boot ! Kevin Elyot after all his Poirot related disasters finally gets it right with his Towards Zero effort - miracles do happen ! But I would rather that he did not get trusted to write the adaptation of Murder On The Orient Express. Let us leave Poirot to experts like Mr Horowitz & Mr Dear ! But after succeeding with Towards Zero I think that Mr Elyot has found his form as a decent Marple script writer !
Not quite up to the standard of previous series October 13, 2008 Period Drama Fan (Kent, UK) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
The four episodes in this box set were ok but I felt some of the acting (particularly from Martine McCutcheon)was unbelievable. Relying on an all star cast does not necessarily mean great acting. My main problem with this series is its presentation - the box doesn't match the other two and therefore looks very odd on the shelf. Although I have enjoyed this particular version of Marple, I am glad the decision has been made to make this the last one as it has run its course.
Blood Pressure Alert October 8, 2008 C. Alton (Notts) 5 out of 7 found this review helpful
If most of the population agrees that Agatha Christie was a genius could someone please explain to me the reason for altering her stories beyond recognition? If you watch these as stand alone, tongue in cheek sort of entertainment they will be enjoyable, if however, you are wanting at least a glimpse of your favorite stories don't bother, it's bad for the blood pressure.
