Amazon.co.uk Review Goldie Hawn, Bette Midler and Diane Keaton prove revenge is a dish best served cold. Former college buddies, they reunite at the funeral of a dear friend who took a swan dive onto Fifth Avenue. All three discover they share the same unhappy history of husbands who dove into middle-age by dumping them for trophy wives. Forming a warring triumvirate, they decide to get even, and along the way remind themselves of long-forgotten capabilities. The action gets a little too "wacky" at times, but the gals are great. Portraying an ageing actress, Hawn is sometimes a little too flamboyant, but there is much fun to be had in her flashiness, especially when she pokes fun at Tinseltown and her persona. Instead of her usual brashness, Midler stretches herself and shows us a woman who is not just unhappy, but also deeply sorrowful. Not that she isn't quick with a wisecrack, but her expressive face alone tells the story of her marriage. As the repressed and guilt-ridden spouse of a self-involved ad executive, Keaton finds her anger, and her voice, when her psychiatrist (Marcia Gay Harden) oversteps ethical boundaries. Watching Keaton grow from an ineffectual homemaker into a powerful businessperson reminds us that it has been far too long since she has done a comedy. Director Hugh Wilson smartly chose supporting players who each brought something unique to the film. However, he does not maintain the first hour's effervescent humour throughout the film, as the ending is weakened by a softening of the wives' resolve. --Rochelle O'Gorman

one of my all time favourites! this is a brilliant movie featuring some of my favourite actresses and actors! wives dumped for younger models get their revenge! DONT GET MAD GET EVERYTHING!
Revenge is a dish best served cold May 16, 2007 Jay (Mauritius) A dynamite cast and a great script make a great comedy, and The First Wives Club is just that. Having Goldie Hawn, Bette Midler and Diane Keaton together for a picture should guarantee that the film is going to be something special, and it is, a witty, breezy comedy about women getting even with their philandering spouses. Although the film can be perceived as very anti-men, it manages to even out the put-downs with some sparkling humour, even though the men in this film are portrayed as not very bright creatures. Another reason to watch it is the amazing supporting cast of first rate players, ranging from Maggie Smith and Sarah Jessica Parker, to Stephen Collins and the great Stockard Channing in a brief but memorable role (she plays too many of these, she needs to get into the limelight). As a trio, Hawn, Midler and Keaton work together like a dream. If you really want to nitpick, I'd say that Keaton occasionally wilts under Hawn and Midler's mammoth talent, but that doesn't really matter when you look at the film as a whole. It's a great, great film, one with many fabulous comedic moments and some star turns.
Mean Spirited April 2, 2007 K. B. Haines 0 out of 10 found this review helpful
As a man I am aware that I am not the target audience for this film, but this movie is simply mean spirited. It has some decent performances from the main actresses but it is simply too preachy to be very entertaining. The breakdown of relationships is often very complex and has a variety of causes. It is abbreviated here to women good men bad. It is basically a movie where you are supposed to support the women 100% as they take all the money from their husbands and inflict other suffering. The end 1/2 hour is simply one long girl power extravaganza and is sickly sweet to boot. If you hate men this is the movie for you.
Excellent feel good comedy June 9, 2005 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
This excellent, funny (and believable) film is absolutely fantastic. All 3 main character women play excellent parts, and their characters are truly believable. My favorite part of the film, has to be the 3 of them singing !
First Wives Club Is Brilliant! April 24, 2005 Ms. S. L. Richardson (Sunderland, UK) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
This is a fantastic film!! Truly inspiring and totally uplifting. The story is serious but playful enough not to get very heavy. You'd have to have a heart of stone not to love it!xx
