3 out of 5 stars Not the best Phantasm, but not the worst.   May 25, 2004
T. M Rogers (Az United States)
I personally prefer the original Phantasm to this re-make, but there is still much to enjoy as Reggie and Mike battle the Tall Man and his minions from the 3rd Dimension! Not as fun as Phantasm III, but much faster paced than part IV. Contains a trailer. Decent quality picture in fullscreen format.

5 out of 5 stars Great swish glossy horror   November 3, 2003

This is a fantastic follow up to the original Phantasm movie which was for it's day a tip-top horror flick - witty, original script with a genuinely scary plot.
This movie is quite the opposite, so why do I give it 4 stars? Well, the plot is so-so, the acting slightly better and the dialogue only marginally better however the movie compensates for this with it's superb visual style. I have yet to come across a modern day horror film that scares in such a startling way like this one. The way in which each scene is shot keeps the viewer on edge (Sam Raimi to thank for that one) - no cheezy zombies or silly scenes - just no-nonsense suspense & scare.
The visual photography of the flying spheres is seen best in this Phantasm film & the creepy dwarfs are very creepy indeed.
Buy this film but please aviod the thrid installment.

2 out of 5 stars Great movie - so so DVD   March 15, 2001

This is the second installment in the Phantasm series written and directed by Don Coscarelli. Part 2 has always been my favorite since it is action-packed, has plenty of gore and an overall lighter mood than the other parts. This is basically an action movie where the good guys go after the tall man using all kinds of groovy home made weapons. This movie seems a bit inspired by Evil Dead 2 with the many one-liners and action sequences. Overall a great movie with good acting, efx and pace.

The DVD release itself is somewhat of a let down. First of all, the movie is presented in full screen and not the original aspect ratio. Secondly, the encoding is not great and this release looks no better than the old Universal laserdisc from 1988. When will DVD companies learn that the minimum the DVD consumers require is original aspect ratio and proper encoding...

Wait for the R1 release which will be widescreen and have a better picture quality at least.
