2 out of 5 stars If you go down to the Woods today.........................   March 31, 2008

Growing up with the Original Star Wars movie's, seeing them all in the cinema I have fond feelings for them all, all except this one. After the Dark master piece of Empire Strikes Back were treated to this rather hap hazard bag of mistakes, Don't get me wrong, there are some great bits, the speeder bike chase the Space battle outside the unfinished Death Star, but these confuse the issue, a few great bits don't make a great film, especially if the rest of the film is made up of twee simple minded Sci Fi hokum, Teddy bears prowl the woods, Luke finds out Leia is his sister in an obviously contrived plot twist, and the final Ignominy, Darth Vader turns out to of been a nice old man all the time, creaky voice and bus pass included. Even the main characters seem a little aimless, Han Solo seems redundant. Were as in Empire he was the central character, in Jedi were treated to a man out his depth and floundering, He bumbles through the film like a naughty schoolboy. It gives the movie a feeling that it's just being made up in the pub as they go along
And although there are cinema defining moments, the speeder bike chase being up there with the chariot race in Ben Hur, we're equally treated to truly awful moments. You'd be forgiven for mistaking the start of the movie for The Muppets in Space and when the first Ewok pops up on the screen I pop off for a cup of tea. And it all culminates in a battle between Darth Vader and Luke that Pales when compared to the Dark Brooding battle through Labyrinthine corridors that we were treated too in Empire, Luke and Darth seem to have forgotten how to do spinning flips and Telekinesis, they seem only able to stand constantly whacking there light sabers together like there trying to smash a Piñata,
It's not that Jedi is a particularly bad film, it's just that it's not good, after 2 such good films ending the trilogy on such a low point is such a disappointment and makes you wish for what could have been, OH Well!, Good, bad or indifferent it's an essential part of the trilogy, you can't buy the others without having this and there's certainly worse things you can do with your Saturday afternoon than watch The Return Of the Jedi.

4 out of 5 stars Good movie, shame about the ewoks   January 26, 2008

Another Star Wars classic although its a shame the ewoks wernt masacred. The final battle between Luke and Vader is what makes this film and the appearence of the Emporer is hugely enjoyable. I would of given this movie 5 out of 5 but them bloody Ewoks!!! ....... hate Ewoks man, hate Ewoks.

..... putting my hatred of Ewoks aside, dont watch the re-mastered version as this DVD has the original version on it and it is by far the superior version to watch. In short the re-mastered version sucks, especially the inclusion of some kind of over the top MTV moment with a hugely expanded musical number in Jabba the Huts court. Who the hell came up with that idea?? What do they take us for? Brain-dead Idiots!! If this DVD only had the re-mastered version i'd give it 3/5 but as the original is on here as well, id give it 4/5 ...... now all they need to do is re-master them bloody ewoks out of the movie and it could get 5/5.

5 out of 5 stars Ho ho hoo ho ho...   January 22, 2008

I remember seeing Return of the Jedi in my local Odeon when I was a sprog, loved it then and still love it now. The first half of the movie in Jabba's palace is superb, years later I'm still seeing creatures in the background I've never seen before! You've also got the original Max Rebo band song in this version too.

5 out of 5 stars The best of the saga - shame on the new releases!   August 28, 2007

When someone mentions this film, theirs only one moment to remember for me, and thats the final fight. Their have been so many films that try to capture a moment of intense emotion and feeling, but few compare to Luke Skywalkers thrashing of Darth Vader. (sorry, but you haven't seen this film yet.. where have you been??) Theirs a short moment when The Sith spites him to carry on releasing his anger, and I alwasy feel goosebumbs when Luke just runs out of the dark, and almost kills his father. Probably one of the best finale's to a film in cinematic history, coupled with the brilliant soundtrack.
I guess i've got carried away now! This film is likely to be the best of the saga for more of a moral reason that you can't deny. This film is the fight back for the rebels! If like me you feel that the 2nd installment (of the originals), The Empire Strikes Back, was a little dark with, what I thought, was a strange final moment at the end, then this turns it around. Throughout, their is a sense of positive emotions, because you know Luke, Leia, and all the rest of the rebels are fighting back.
And with the brighter mood comes more location, from an 'earth-y' looking woodland, to a sand-pit where Luke is sent to be killed! Its such an action packed film that you just have to like it.
It also ties up some loose ends, like Han Solo discovering who Luke's sister is.. the most heartwarming moment is likely to be the final cut of the movie, in which all the rebels have a party in the woodland, and Luke is watched over by all the good side of the force in ghost form. I've always said its the music that does it, and I won't take that back!
This DVD included both the original cinema release and the new, cleaned up release from about 1997. Once you compare both, you won't touch the original - its actually quite degrading! What more can I say? Buy it!

5 out of 5 stars My favourite Star Wars film.   October 13, 2006

This has always been my favourite Star Wars film and i still watch it on a regular basis, the speeder bike chase and the final Luke/Vader/Palpatine showdown are some of my all time favourite movie moments ever. This great two disc set comes with the theatrical version of the film on the second disc and along with the previous two films released in a similar fashion they make for an amazing piece of movie magic.
