worth watching... once August 25, 2007 P. Hanson (Northumberland, England) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The Fantasist is a 1986 thriller written and directed by Robin Hardy (who directed one of the greatest cult films ever made - The Wicker Man). The story takes place in 1980's Dublin while a serial killer is on the loose. Meanwhile, a young woman called Patricia leaves her home in rural Ireland to take up a teaching job in the city. She soon begins to receive weird phone calls. She also comes to the attention of three older men - a detective, a writer and a teacher. Could one of these men be the killer? That is the mystery that drives the plot. The pace of the film is quite slow, and there's little in the way of action. Though it holds the viewers attention and keeps you guessing. Interestingly, there is one scene that may have been the inspiration for the 'To Kill A Mocking Alan' episode of I'm Alan Partridge. In this scene Patricia is led into a room only to discover the walls are covered in photographs of her. As this film was made in the mid-eighties it looks quite dated in places. There is some amusement to be had from seeing the clothes and hairstyles of the time - particularly in the scene at the nightclub. The Fantasist does not come anywhere close to the sheer brillance of the iconic Wicker Man, and you need to have that in mind before you watch it. Never the less it's a decent film. I'd recommend you rent this DVD rather than buy it, as it's not the type of film to be watched again and again.
