Amazon.co.uk Review This 1976 adventure story set in World War II concerns a Nazi plot to kidnap Churchill from his retreat--or murder him if need be. The Eagle Has Landed has a large, great cast and a director, John Sturges, who's been down this road of ensemble action before (The Magnificent Seven, The Great Escape) make this project exciting if not as memorable as Sturges's more famous works. The weak ending doesn't help. -- Tom Keogh

A Good Classic War Movie November 25, 2007 D. G. Parrott (Out There!) This is one of those films that you either love, or hate! For my part, I love this movie, always have - But now the director has restored about 15 minutes of the movie which was previously removed - This film is now excellent! Sir Michael Caine plays the part of Oberst (Colonel) Kurt Steiner very well, and Donald Sutherland plays the part of Liam Devlin amazingly accurate to the book! The basis of the story is that a German Colonel (Robert Duvall) in the Abwehr (German Intelligence Corps) has come into some info that Sir Winston Churchill is to be staying very close to a reasonably isolated Norfolk beach, and thus comes up with the idea of kidnapping him, with the hope of forcing the allies into a negotiated peace, thus ending the second world war! Enter the recently court-martialled Colonel Steiner (Caine) and his detachment of battle hardened Fallschirmjeager (Paratroopers) who are given the job of parachuting into Norfolk to capture Churchill. Through no fault of their own, the plans goes south, and they end up having to improvise.... I'm saying no more as it would ruin the film. There are some big names in this movie, Sir Michael Caine, Donald Sutherland, Robert Duvall - Larry Hagman plays the part of a priviledged yet somewhat useless army colonel, and the excellent, yet under-rated Treat Williams plays the part of an army ranger captain very well. Anthony Quayle plays his part of Admiral Canaris (head of the Abwehr) excellently, but the best acting must surely go to the late Donald Pleasance for his chillingly accurate portrayal of Himmler. Some other stars of the late 70's are in this movie too... Jean Marsh - of Upstairs Downstairs fame - along with Judy Geeson, Jenny Agutter and Maurice Roeves. All in all, a belter of a film!

the book is absolutely brilliant-5 stars, a must read. the film - with this cast it should have been longer than it is with more detail taken from the book, a stunning cast which opens with Sir Anthony Quayle and Donald Pleasance, the superb Robert Duvall. Did a movie ever have a better cast? Well worth having a copy once you have read the book, Michael Caine and Sven Bertil Taube well cast as Germans, Donald Sutherland a very good IRA man, Jean Marsh too brief as Joanna Grey, Jenny Agutter slightly old for Molly, but believeable. Larry Hagman-definately right for his role, Treat Williams-great casting, shame only that they didnt develop the script a little more for such a superb cast - SEE this Film

This film is set in Norfolk by the sea, though filmed in the South Oxfordshire village of Mapledurham by the Thames(known to me from childhood). It tells the story of a "factional" attempt to kill Churchill while that "worthy" is sat pickled in his customary cognac. The plot fails, partly because one of the German parachute soldiers saves a young child from drowning, but dying himself on the waterwheel (a real one which I remember from young childhood: the film company restored it to use). Good performances from all concerned, even Michael Caine (about my least favourite "star"). This film does remind one that, prior to the advent of the appalling Spielberg and his "school", even Hollywood was making films showing the Germans (and even "Nazi's") as human beings and even as good human beings, if any human beings be good. The venom was not there in the 1960's or 1970's: see, for example, Operation Crossbow (70's) or indeed Ice Cold in Alex.
Much improved - the issuers have listened June 7, 2004 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
Buying this seemed the least I could after my (and others') comments on the previous Carlton (video) edition. The restored picture print is an big improvement, although the yellow transit van still appears. Some deleted scenes are restored, although they were clearly cut from the theatrical version for good reason. The on location interviews included on the discs are interesting, but mainly for enthusiasts.
Disappointment March 19, 2004 9 out of 10 found this review helpful
I love the book and the film, having seen it on TV a few times. The plot is a good "what might have been" taken from one tiny little fact that Mr Higgins found out, that in one date during the war Winston Churchill was recorded to be two places at once...What if the Nazis tried to capture him, not knowing that little fact? Sadly this version of the DVD is rubbish. It is not widescreen, and scenes have been cut, like the soldier playing the organ before the Church battle and when Liam Devlin and the priest talk about going to church on Sunday, the priest mentions the "first shall be last and the last shall be first" verse from the Bible and Devlin replies "Well Father, I'm assured a place at the head of the line". It spoils the film as I remember noticing the missing scenes immediately, "hang on where was that bit when...". It is a very good film to get, just get another version, NOT this one, I am looking to replace it now!
