Amazon.co.uk Review Clint Eastwood held the dual role of director and star of this 1975 spy thriller, which makes up for sluggish pacing with a breathtaking climax on a treacherous peak in the Swiss Alps. The plot kicks into gear when Eastwood, playing a retired assassin, is recruited back into a secret organisation to avenge the murder of an old friend. He's then blackmailed into making a second "hit"; this time his target is one of three men who will be attempting to conquer the Eiger, a dangerous peak in Switzerland. An accomplished climber, Eastwood's character joins the expedition with George Kennedy as leader of the ground crew. Shifting loyalties, apparent betrayals, and paranoid suspicion factor into the suspenseful climax on the sheer face of the mountain. This memorable sequence--for which Eastwood performed his own mountain-climbing stunts--is effectively intense, built on a standard plot of double-cross and intrigue that was intended to combine Eastwood's screen persona with the global adventure of the James Bond films. For the most part it works--it's not one of Eastwood's better films, but it's got some first-class thrills (and a sly performance by Jack Cassidy) to grab and hold your interest. --Jeff Shannon, Amazon.com

Clint at his sarcastic best!! February 4, 2007 Ian Middleton (UK) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
`Does your physical disability preclude you from coming to the point?' Just one of many classic one-liners delivered by a stone-faced Dr Hemlock. This movie has all the wit and sarcasm of a Dirty Harry classic, and all the adventure and stunning landscape of his westerns. An Art teacher by day, but retired government assassin by night, Dr Hemlock is brought out of retirement to sanction the two men involved in killing his friend. The first job was easy, but the second proves the real challenge. His employer knows only that the man is one of a group who plans to climb the Eiger Mountain in Switzerland, a mountain that nearly killed Hemlock the first time he tried to climb it. But the mountain is not his only adversary. One of his fellow climbers, who could well be someone he'll need to rely on when in trouble, is the one he must sanction. But which one is it? The photography in this movie is stunning; emotive images of death-defying climbs from monument valley to the Swiss Alps. Some complain the movie is long and slow, but I watched the short version and then bought the full length DVD, which contained more excellent scenes that actually clarified some parts of the movie. So I would recommend you buy the full length version. You won't be bored, not for a minute.
AGENT EASTWOOD January 20, 2007 Coach Potato ONE OF EASTWOOD'S MOST UNDER RATED FILMS! The Eigar Sanction is Eastwood's attempt to cash in on the 007 spy epics, and in terms of believability easily surpasesses most of them. The mountain photography is stunning, and John Williams musical score is a sign of quality. Eastwood plays J. Hemlock a collage art professor who makes his money as an assassin. He is blackmailed out of retirement to make one last hit, but it is going to be hard going....
ACTION IN THE SWISS ALPS... November 10, 2002 Lawyeraau (Balmoral Castle) 9 out of 13 found this review helpful
Based upon the novel of the same name by Trevanian and directed by Clint Eastwood who also stars in it, this is an interesting action film, as most of the relevant action takes place on the Eiger mountain in the Swiss Alps. The story line is fairly simple. A retired professional assassin and climber turned art collector, played by Eastwood, is suddenly forced out of retirement when he is made an offer he can't refuse. His mission is to kill an unknown double agent who deep sixed a close friend of Eastwood. Be prepared for total political incorrectness and rampant sexism reminiscent of the early Bond flicks. It is somewhat jarring to see and hear this in these politically correct times. When you see the film, you will know what I mean. Notwithstanding this, it is still an entertaining film. Eastwood's quest for the unknown double agent takes him to the Eiger, where he ultimately makes a life changing decision, as does his friend, played by George Kennedy. This film should appeal to those who enjoy thrillers, buddy films, and action movies. Climbing enthusiasts will also enjoy it for the spectacular mountain footage and gripping climbing scenes.
intriguing spy thriller with fantastic scenery. May 16, 2001 pdadams@enterprise.net (Ehgland) 2 out of 5 found this review helpful
Clint Eastwood plays Dr Hemlock a college lecturer who is approached by a spy network that he used to work for to kill certain individuals. The plot is really good with some twists at the end. The story takes us from aizona to Switzerland with a well chosen cast. I really enjoyed this film.
Much under-stated April 15, 2001 4 out of 6 found this review helpful
Whilst never a top grossing film of Clint's, I believe it deserves special recognition as one of my favourites. A superb screenplay based on a fantastic book. This film set the foundations of many future 'spy and intrigue' projects. The photography and direction alone deserve 5 stars.
