Amazon.co.uk Review Arguably the best and most personal of director David Cronenberg's early films, The Brood is an extremely unsettling horror film about familial disintegration and emotional trauma taken to a monstrous extreme. Art Hindle stars as a man embroiled in a bitter custody struggle with his estranged wife (Samantha Eggar), who is undergoing therapy at psychiatrist Oliver Reed's controversial institute. Reed's treatment causes his patients to give form to their inner conflicts, and Eggar--whose psyche is at the boiling point from childhood abuse as well as the custody trial--creates a horde of homicidal humanoid children who enact bloody revenge on anyone who has threatened their "mother". Cronenberg's first feature with name actors and composer Howard Shore has its share of gruesome moments, but the film's subtext--how emotional violence impacts a family--is its most chilling aspect. --Paul Gaita

The Brood February 4, 2003 Chris Roberts (The United States) 4 out of 7 found this review helpful
David Cronenberg's best early feature 'The Brood' deals with the concept of violence within a family and how it is often passed down from generation to generation. As a horror film it may be hard for many who like their films purely escapist to stomach but as a mataphor for child abuse and the tearing apart of a family it is an unmatched artistic acheivement. Oliver Reed gives a brillant performance that makes up for the films other shortcomings in the acting department.
Early Cronenburg March 2, 2001 7 out of 15 found this review helpful
Early Cronenburg movie, apparently based on his own experience when breaking up from his wife. Low budget, not really scary and only for hardcore Cronenburg fans.Plot revolves around Nola, who after the painful breakup of her marriage, seeks treatment at an experimental psychiatric clinic known as the Somafree Institute of Psychoplasmatics. While there, under the care of Dr. Raglan, the institute's founder, she is encouraged to work through her subconscious feelings of hurt and rage in a rather novel way: through bodily manifestation. Some of the clinic's patients develop grotesque sores, others cancerous growths or tumors. But Nola goes a step further. She gives "birth" to living incarnations of her darkest inner impulses. Once released, these walking ids exact gruesome revenge against Nola's family, especially her ex-husband, for every real and imagined slight that she has suffered at their hands over the course of her troubled life.
