4 out of 5 stars Underground - the raw cinema of the Warhol film factory   November 28, 2003

Released, presumably for status value, under the Andy Warhol umbrella this is in fact a film by one of his entourage Paul Morrissey.
Flesh has a basic premise: following the exploits of a pretty young hustler as we are encouraged to engage with, and be shooked by, his daily life in New York.
This film is low on technique, in terms of glossy style typical of Hollywood features, but this is irrelevant. This film centres around giving its audience voyeristic pleasures through observing perversity (as it is imagined). Its style plays like a home video/documentary/late night (jerry springer-esqe) chat show, and from my point of view that works! It's involving yet shallow, like an x-rated conversation you happen to over hear on a bus, you're made to take an interest in the characters and the unbelievable deviations they bring to showcase.
And along with that, if that isn't reason enough for you to watch this film, it’s superficial! Like Hollywood but less unhanded about it, beauty is a constant focus, pretty boys posing, stunning girls parading and lots of O.T.T glamour (drag queen style)
Sure it’s over acted, badly shot and intensely shallow, but who cares! It’s entertaining kitsch, fabulous (if you like that sort of thing)!
