Not for all tastes February 19, 2007 A. M. Mckenzie (London) A friend gave me this trilogy as a present, and to honest, I've only watched the first two films .. but here's my impressions of the work of José Mojica Marins. At Midnight I'll Take Your Soul was made in South America by its driven and original director Marins. Lacking a lead actor, he played the character of Coffin Joe himself and doesn't do a bad job. And though it might seem a bit odd and creaky now, it should be considered in the context of the year it was made (1963) and the society it was made for. That year, UK's Hammer Films made Phantom of the Opera, Paranoiac and Kiss of the Vampire. Looking at that trio, they all look terribly dated now. At Midnight I'll Take Your Soul looks, by comparison the more recent film, despite having a fraction of the busdget of the Hammers. And much of the horror in AMITYS comes from the blasphemous crimes of the lead character, something that would have been a great deal more shocking in 1960s Brazil than we'd find it today. So, an interesting curiosity for true horror buffs. The second film I had more of a problem with, as it just seems to be a bunch of bad taste vignettes strung together with no real plot. Probably worth having a trawl around on IMDB before you commit to buying this. Definitely not for all tastes.
