Karen August 6, 2008 miss k b gordon Absolutely loved this movie and I'm not much of a fan of Carry On. Harry H Corbett shows us amazing glimpses of his talent and genius as he hams it up with the rest of the crew. I heard that Sid James had originally been cast as the Sherlock Holmes character, but Harry was the best choice and his performance is polished and a joy to watch. Some wonderful set pieces which had me laughing out loud and the usual silly scenes we can expect from a Carry On movie. The story never gets tired and will appeal to all ages. I'm also sure that sultry Fenella Fielding could still cause a fashion stampede for replica red gowns.
Frying tonight!!!!! April 14, 2008 Mr. R. Johnson (Selby) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
There are no words to describe the brilliance of this parody of the horror movies of the past. If you have seen Frankenstein, The Mummy, or even the werewolf movies of old, and have a wacky sense of humour like me, then you will enjoy this one immensely. If you are a stick in the mud prude, then don't watch. The only thing better at parodying these styles of movies are the great Abbott and Costello movies. Utterly brilliant Carry On. Buy it.
The team take the ham out of Hammer November 3, 2007 Lou Knee (England) 3 out of 6 found this review helpful
A great spoof of Hammer's very British horror films which were very open to ridicule, as great as they were. The unsubtlety of them is the main target here, and their equally British and unsubtle comedy counterparts, the Carry On Team, could really do no wrong in lampooning them, could they. The jokes are terrible, the costumes and make up are horribly overdone, the acting is as camp as camp can be, and the film's a scream. You can sense the enjoyment the cast is having, being given the licence to overdo the whole thing, (they always did anyway, whatever the film). Some of the favourites are missing for this one, Babs Windsor, Sid James and Hattie Jaques, but the excellent Jim Dale is here (being his usual slightly dappy self), the incomparable letch playing Peter Butterworth (one of my favourite Carry Onsters) is magnifectly cowardly here, Bernie Bresslaw is perfect as the odd looking butler, and first time Carry Onster Harry H.Corbett takes the role that would usually be played by Sid James. His casting proved to be perfect though, as his acting ability gave this film a rather classy edge, missing from most Carry Ons, and has to be part of the reason why this is many fans' favourite Carry On. You sense the writers really enjoyed working on this one too, as the opportunities for gags are many and obvious. Technically, this has to be the best made Carry On, as the recreation of a misty and creepy Victorian London (on an obviously tiny budget) is really very good indeed. So far then, it's all looking pretty good for an entertaining and enjoyable experience, but just in case you're a particularly difficult to please type, I've saved the best 'till last: The best reason of all to watch this awfully good movie...Yes, it's Kenneth Williams being camper than ever and having an absolute wail of a time. 'Frying tonite!'
Good English fun August 9, 2007 Laura (Worksop, Nottingham) 3 out of 5 found this review helpful
Hilarious. Outrageous. Cheeky. Silly characters with saucy words. Silly tame scare factors. Brilliant actors such as the great Kenneth Williams and Fienella Fielding and Harry.H.Corbet, and also Peter Butterworth. It's all just good old romping fun, not to be taken seriously at all and just watched because it always makes us laugh.
a classic March 20, 2007 sean paul mccann (ireland) 6 out of 9 found this review helpful
carry on screaming is unusual in that a good number of regulars appear in it and a good number dont despite the series being quite in its infancy, for example sid james isnt in this nor is kenny connor to name but a few ,but harry corbett of steptoe and son is drafter in for his one and only carry on and does a great job spoofing sherlock holmes and hamming it up like a ham dinner and the results are great, although never scary as the title may imply,of course this isnt a horror movie but spoofs the genre along with a wink at the sherlock holmes series'. Kenneth williams is in this as a mad zombie of sorts who gets his henchmen who are werewolfs to kidnap women, then williams turns them into manequins and sells them to clothes shops, and corbett along with peter butterworth and jim dale are out to uncover the truth, cue lots of jokes and naughty references that in truth wouldnt offend a priest but are still priceless, quick and clever carry on screaming has a good plot and the movie never feels tired and has never shown its true age in the 41 years that have followed.
