A tribute to the indominatable human spirit March 9, 2008 LXIX (scotland) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Alive is a true story of a plane crash that happened in the Andes mountains in South America in October 1972. 45 Uruguayans were on their way to Chile for a rugby match. The passengers were made up of the players and some family members. Only 16 survived their ordeal and it was a miracle that they did. This story is (unfortunately) famous for the fact that the survivors ate parts of their dead comrades in order to live. That instinct for survival shouldn't overshadow what was truly a remarkable tale of human endurance: these people survived a plane crash, a devastating avalanche and 72 days 11,000 feet up a mountain in Winter. I've took a star off as the ending is rather abrupt and what should have been the highlight of the movie isn't featured (you'll know what I'm talking about when you watch this). The DVD also contains an excellent 48 minute documentary as a Special Feature. The documentary includes many interviews with the actual survivors and includes details about their personal recollections, the subsequent media furore that surrounded them, and updates on how they all progressed with their different lives yet retained a strong 'brotherhood' link with each other in later years. Most people watching this movie will no doubt ask themselves - 'Would I do the same thing if I had to..?'
Very Powerful February 10, 2008 J. Roberts (Maryland) 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
This is a tremendously powerful story in which a plane full of South American football players and some of their family members crashes in the Andes mountains, killing lots of them and injuring others. 'Alive' tells the story of their survival, via the threat of avalanches, injury, cold, and starvation, and the extreme lengths they have to go to in order to survive. All of the cast are convincingly emotional; the story progresses well and the characterisation is excellent. This is all the more powerful considering it is based on a true story.
interesting study in psychology December 26, 2007 Paul J. Fitzgerald Like others have said, the director handled the uncomfortable aspects of this storyline in a tactful and compassionate manner. An interesting study in psychology, the film describes a real-life Survivor scenario, as in the reality television show. Ethan Hawke's character is the one I find most memorable, including his dangerous hike out of the mountains to safety. Author of Adjust Your Brain: A Practical Theory for Maximizing Mental Health.
Breathtaking November 13, 2007 Mr. Shaun J. Nickeas (England) This film is amazing. Based on a true story it demonstrates humanities endurance faced against all odds of survival. Thinking of what these people went through was gut wrenching and emotional, doing the unthinkable in order to live a little longer those extreme conditions is something we never think about in our warm safe homes.........Would you do the same if your life depended on it? IF YOU HAVENT SEEN THIS FILM, i URGE YOU TO WATCH IT. I guarantee at the end of it, you will want to buy it to own. I also bet it will make you search you conscience and soul to answer the question..........WOULD YOU EAT ANOTHER HUMAN BEING TO LIVE BECAUSE IF YOU DIDN'T DEATH WAS CERTAIN!!!!!!!!!! A POWERFUL AND THOUGHT PROVOKING FILM OF GREAT MAGNITUDE! SCHINDLERS LIST IS THE ONLY OTHER FILM THAT CAN MATCH THIS!!!!!
