Amazon.co.uk Review The Disney Channel's High School Musical is a combination of backstage action and Grease without the unwholesome habits. Scoring record ratings at the time of its January 2006 broadcast, it's a smash hit with tween audiences (ages 6 to 10), but appealing for all ages. At a New Year's Eve party, Troy (Zac Efron) has a chance meeting with Gabriella (Vanessa Anne Hudgens) when they share a karaoke song. Lo and behold, when school resumes, they discover that Gabriella has just transferred to Troy's East High School, a campus divided into tight cliques of jocks, cheerleaders, brainiacs, and skater dudes. Eager to recapture the magic they'd discovered during karaoke, Troy and Gabriella consider auditioning for the school's upcoming musical, much to the dismay of the school's frost queen/theater goddess, Sharpay (Ashley Tisdale). Problem is, Troy is also the star of the basketball team and Gabrielle is being recruited to compete in the Scholastic Decathlon. Will they give up their cliques to start something new, or will they do as the show's first big anthem urges and "Stick to the Status Quo"? Well, this is a Disney movie, so maybe the sacrifices won't be that hard, and even the hints of romance are mild. The bestselling soundtrack is catchy in that Disney-pop kind of way, mixing in a dash of hip-hop ("Getcha Head in the Game," punctuated by squeaky basketball shoes and other sound effects), salsa ("Bop to the Top"), and the endearingly hammy ("What I've Been Looking For" performed by Sharpay and her brother, Ryan, played by Lucas Gabreel). It's not hard to imagine High School Musical becoming a semi-staple for high school groups to perform themselves. DVD bonus features include sing-along subtitles; a 9-minute featurette discussing casting, recording sessions, and rehearsals; a multi-angle look at a rehearsal of "Bop to the Top"; and music videos for "We're All in This Together" and a song that didn't make it into the final film, "I Can't Take My Eyes Off of You," performed by Efron, Hudgens, Tisdale, and Gabreel. --David Horiuchi

Cheese Balls September 8, 2008 R. L. Haydon After accidentally buying 6 copies of this film, I decided I'd watch it until I loved it. It was pure cheese, with precious American teens singing in often nasal voices. On the surface it's something that I would usually hate - but somehow, it drew me in. This isn't to say that the plot was thrilling, well written, or easily defined as a plot at all - but it was enough to keep me in my seat and entertained well enough. Even though this isn't a shining review - I would recommend watching it if it's available to borrow - but not worth buying perhaps.

After being roped into looking after my little cousin on a saturday night, what more joy could I have than watch high school musical with her. Of course I've heard of the film due to all the hype it's caused but I didn't really think it was my type of film. Anyway, I was pleasantly surprised at how good this film turned out to be. The acting and singing are both pretty impressive, and the songs definetely get stuck in your head! All the actors i'd never seen/heard of before (except Ashley Tisdale in the Suite Life) but I'm sure we've alot more to see of them in the future! Although high school musical was primarily aimed at the "tweens", a category I don't fit into (i'm 16), I think it would appeal to any age group. On the whole I'd recommend this film to anyone. If your thinking about buying it - go ahead, its only 10ish and you can always flog it on eBay if you really don't like it. This films certainly one to watch on a rainy day, or if you just want the feel good factor :)
Rubbish straight from the Disney Channel December 18, 2007 E. Moffat (London) 1 out of 6 found this review helpful
This is no Grease (1978) - it never pretended to be and it's barely comparable. It doesn't even fit into the same category- Grease was a cinematographic triumph, this is a "TV film". Grease had guts in releasing as a motion picture and is a smash hit classic, with a soundtrack that is an artistic achievement. High Street-er, School Musical comes from a sattelite channel - the "Disney Channel", with a market audience of kids. Disney do not have the guts to release this work as a piece of cinematography. Not without testing it on TV first, and marketing the franchise ten fold. For those reasons, High School musical is a wimp. Not only that, it is a joke. In this DVD, we see lots of amateurish actors rising up to mime the worst songs with the most pretentious, "Yeh, yeh yehhhhh!", and hand-on-heart-sideways-step-back-arm swings. Walt Disney should be turning in his grave. Remember the high quality of films such as Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988), and the distinction set by Beauty and the Beast (1993) - as recognised by the National Film Registry. Nothing wrong with a bit of fun, you might say. Yes, nothing wrong with that - but it is really only "a bit" of fun and not even a great deal of fun- so even on those grounds it fails. It is a truly apalling TV film. And, no, it does not fill in the gaps left in kids TV by Saved by the Bell (1989), Prince of Bell Air (1990) and Keenan and Kel (1996). It is a mutation of various other things done in the past.
A happy, upbeat film for everyone. December 15, 2007 Robin (Shoreditch. London.) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
My daughter came back from visiting her friend and was raving about how much she loved this movie she had seen. As she is just 13 I'm conscientious of allowing her to see 'teen films' with adult issues, but as this is a Disney film I bought her a copy. We watched it together and I was really surprised to find that I enjoyed it. It tells the story of a romance between two high school students Troy and Gabriella, and their efforts to perform in the school play. The music is modern upbeat pop and is really catchy. This film is not about heavy or gritty issues. It is about the innocence of first love. It is a Grease Lite for the noughties generation, and I mean this as a good compliment. Just lovely!
