2 out of 5 stars Do not Buy Creative X-Fi Xtreme Music If you have Windows Vista   November 6, 2007
Mr. R. W. Lockie (London)
I have recently upgraded to vista, and due to a lack of reliable drivers, I now have the annoying crackling, fuzzying, buzzing sounds coming from my sound card every so often.

Somethign to do with DMA, and a bunch of other techno stuff, that CREATIVE are blaming MICROSOFT FOR and VISA VIRSA.

Dont expect help if your having this issue.

I may soon rip it out of my machine and install something else.

1 out of 5 stars A scandalously poor product.   June 15, 2007

I bought this sound card for my dedicated flight sim PC set-up. (Using a sound card rather than onboard sound, frees up some processing power). Unfortunately, despite not being made aware of it before throwing my money away, this card conflcits with my Nvidia GPU and the result is (as many others have said), my PC constantly fails to see that the PCI card is installed and every time I boot up I get 'New Hardware not installed properly' messages. Within FS2004 and FSX I get pops and crackles and then after using the PC for about 20 minutes, a complete lock up caused by this sound card. Creative are doing nothing about this problem and it's scandalous that they take money from people and give this card that barely works with a LOT of people's PC set-ups.

This sound card is indeed a fantastic one. It does improve sound quality no doubt about it. However what I think is important that people realise that not only the sound card alone is going to improve the quality of the sound coming out of your computer. For example, the speakers are vital. If you don't have a set of relatively quality speakers, then there is no point in getting the X-Fi Xtreme Music-Internal Audio Card. There is only such a quality of sound you can get from cheap speakers. What I would reccomend is the Logitech Z-5500 Surround Sound Speakers. I bought these from Amazon also, for a very affordable price, and the sound I get out of them with this sound card is sensational. In terms of the problems other people had with drivers etc.; all you need to do is install updated drivers from the Creative website (this is what I did, and I have had no problems yet).

So, if you are thinking of creating your computer into a source of your music and dvd needs, then accompany this sound card with a pair of decent speakers. The reason I gave it 4/5, is that I believe the price is probably a tad high, but still well worth getting!

4 out of 5 stars Good sound card but of limited use   October 2, 2006

My previous card was a Creative Audigy 2 Value. When buying this, I was concerned about the reports of crackling and popping noises from other reviews on this site and elsewhere. I have to say that I have had this for 1 month and have had no such problems thus far. The installation was simple, I downloaded the latest drivers from the Creative website, plugged in the card, then installed the downloaded drivers. My main observations are as follows:

Pros:
Sound card takes the load off the CPU in games (my CPU temperatures dropped by around 5 degrees C during gaming).
Powerful sound card will be exploited more and more in future game releases.

Cons:
Noticed absolutely no difference in sound quality compared to my old sound card, using Creative T5900 speakers.
Some of the features are a bit gimmicky - like the Crystalliser, for example. It just doesn't seem worth using.

The best reason to get this card would be for gaming in my opinion. For just listening to music, stick with the Audigy 2 or even decent onboard sound.

5 out of 5 stars So far so very good   August 17, 2006

I am not technical but do appreciate good quality sound. I recently purchased a new Dell 5150 desk top (of reasonable spec) and debated at the time of purchase whether to include the Dell recommended X-Fi Xtreme Music sound card. I was advised by others that this was not necessary as the 'on-board' sound chip was more than adequate. I purchased a cheap set of 5.1 speakers (X530's) and a pair of Sennheiser headphones. Sound quality was acceptable but, as expected, not great. I then read numerous reviews of the X-Fi card and despite some severe warnings re system crashes, poor drivers etc. I eventually succumbed, and purchased the card. Having read various warnings I made sure the various necessary drivers were up to date before installing the card and so far I have not experienced any problems. The card has met/exceeded all expectations (based on rave reviews from others) and I would highly recommend it to anyone looking to vastly improve sound quality and functionality.
