Better than my previous one but not perfect August 17, 2008 Brian A. Randall (Beds UK) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I purchased this after sheer frustration with my previous tuner (Pinnacle DVB-T PCI) which had a number of issues including; dead buttons on the remote, EPG only worked on some channels, sometimes needed 2-3 boots to get to work, constant minor dropouts in audio (not due to a poor signal), failing to record timed programmes for no reason. Having a ASUS motherboard on 2 PC's now I find the brand reliable and therefore went for this tuner - though Amazon do not list it as ASUS making it difficult to find. Pros of this tuner and software: Stable tuning locks on to stations well Cyberlink Powercinema is simple to use (better than Nero's version), remote is comprehensive and has limited functionality on other windows software Though not in the description, this is capable of Twin Tuner operation and picture in picture for 2 different channels No need to place the channels in the correct order, you will find after a short while in use the channels go to standard Freeview layout (not the same numbers though) Full multimedia experience from the remote, photos, DVD, recordings, audio Record programmes to your chosen location with any name you choose Cons of this tuner and software: The DVB-T TV aerial socket is the same as the FM radio so you would need some method of combining the signals - not a major issue as the Freeview radio is there anyway It took 3 retune attempts to get the software to find all channels. The included aerial does not work in many areas, you need a proper digital rooftop aerial. Unlike the Pinnacle software, this software is not capable of recognising the 16:10 (Wide-Aspect) standard of monitors, so 16:9 (widescreen) broadcasts are very slightly elongated Timer recording dies not work if Powercinema is off - it just boots the software at the record time then nothing else happens. Powercinema is not mouse friendly it is difficult to control the scroll rate of lists. In my opinion the picture quality does not seem as pin-sharp as the pinnacle, looking a little blocky. Like the pinnacle version, tuning will not pick up any stations that have closed down for the day (e.g. UKTV history will not be found if you tune after 6pm). Though the stations can be found under their evening equivalent channel e.g. UKTV History can be found under Virgin 1 during the day. There is no "add channels" option so a full retune is needed for any changes in the service. Like the pinnacle there are no "red button" or digital teletext functions available, only old fashioned teletext, which on Freeview is non-existent. The free EPG service is full of errors, there is an option to subscribe to an internet EPG. Most album art on the audio does not seem to be recognised. I have not tried the analogue tuner as you need to swap the Ariel to the other socket to use this. Overall it is a much better tuner than the Pinnacle though by no means perfect. It is however a good value multimedia package and reliable tuner at a very low cost.
