Beware the lack of leads November 30, 2007 M. Peterson (UK) I received this for a birthday present assuming it would have everything it needed to get me up and running in the box. However it is virtually useless as it comes with absolutely nothing-you literally get the dock and adapters so any ipod can be used with it. Other than that you can't connect it to anything until you have bought all the leads. That is why I have given it 2 stars as it is a nice idea in principle but only if you have all the leads that are necessary. Otherwise you are shelling out alot of money for a few bits of plastic.
Get the newer model September 21, 2007 Al Iguana (Wales, UK) 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
There is a newer model on Apple's website, that has a remote control included, can navigate playlists, and supports the iPod Classic/Touch. If you have one of those newer models then check it out (haven't seen it on Amazon yet)
very fragile socket connections August 10, 2007 Pierre Giraud (London) 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
I am about to buy my 3rd one as all of them have had connection sockets at the back which rather quickly (less than a year) failed and loose faulty contacts started happening. Not the quality or fragile product I would expect from Apple and certainly not at that price for something which basically is a plug connector...
NOT an apple TV replacement June 11, 2007 Donat Fatet (London) 13 out of 13 found this review helpful
I think I read here someone who was satisfied with this dock as an apple TV replacement. I would just like to comment that such a claim is a bit misleading as this dock does not allow to navigate the menus of the ipod with the apple remote. The only functionality available with this dock and the apple remote alone is play/pause, prev./next track, vol. up/down. It is NOT possible to change playlist/film without using the ipod itself (i.e. the "menu" button on the remote does not work with the dock). Other than that I am satisfied with design, build and packaging. I would have however considered other docks if I had known about the lack of remote interaction... I will remind again that this does NOT come with cables, and does NOT come with the apple remote.
Strangely Essential Yet Practically Useless June 9, 2007 Alan (England) 40 out of 40 found this review helpful
I imagine that most people who buy an iPod, end up buying an Apple iPod Universal Dock. It's strangely essential yet practically useless. It's one of those things that you HAVE to have, yet you don't need. All it really does is hold your iPod in an upright position, making it look neater on your desk. As with every product of course, there are pros and cons to the Universal Dock... Pros: - It looks nice - It's heavy, so it will stay where you put it - It has an Infrared sensor on the front, so you can control the docked iPod with an Apple Remote - It has a Line Out socket on the back, so you can connect the docked iPod to a speaker system - It has an S-video Out socket on the back, so you can connect the docked iPod to a TV for video playback Cons: - It doesn't really support the iPod, making the docked iPod awkward to use in it - It's only available in white, not black - It costs 25, which is a good 20% of the cost of a 4GB iPod Nano! - It doesn't come with ANY cables, such as an iPod Dock Connector (an extra 15) - It doesn't come with an Apple Remote (an extra 19) - A Universal Dock, Dock Connector and Remote cost 59 in total. Mmmm, what great value!
