Nice, solid drive... May 8, 2008 Stuart L. Mason (Manhattan, NY) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This is a well made, solid, hard-working drive. Great price, and seemingly reliable. My only issue is that for a drive of this size, Firewire would be a nice addition. If you're wanting a drive to back up on, which is why I purchased this, then USB is still slow (yes, even USB2.0). If you're using it as a main usable storage system, then you'll have no problem at all. I like it, but I wish I'd gone Firewire, purely as I purchased the 500GB to back up my other PCs and it's a slow process. Overnight backups, maybe. And don't even think about USB1. STOP! You're thinking about USB1! Nice drive for a great price. Just think about what you want it for (more than I did).
A Damn Good Hard Drive May 1, 2008 Mr. N. D. Thornton (London UK) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Great design, easy to use. not had any problems so far. comes formatted in FAT32 format, which you might want to change to NTFS before you put anything on it, but apart from that seems like a good buy. aluminium casing acts a heat sink, so there is no fan, and it therefore runs as close to silent as you could ever want. Also gives it a sturdy feel. would quite happily chuck it down a flight of stairs, if i felt the urge, with complete piece of mind that it wouldnt break, although i havnt tested that theory....
Excellent drive and support April 29, 2008 Hachi Roku 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I got the drive at christmas, and until about a week ago performed perfectly, very fast read and write, and had no problems with any computers it was used on. Then the power supply began to overheat and eventually burnt out. However, it still deserves 5 stars, as I emailed technical support, and the morning after they had sent a replacement power supply! Excellent product and excellent support, well worth it.
Freecom External hard-drive 500gb. April 28, 2008 Mrs. G. Williams 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
No problem with this from consideration to implementation! I notice it's now (a month later) just 78 - I bought at 82 - such is the pace of technological advancement! However, that is by-the-way! The real issue is that this piece of hardware delivers! I have no qualms whatsoever in recommending this equipment. The fact that I took some 6.5 hours to reformat to NTFS was probably down to my not knowing about "fast-format" - but I'm not sure? Can't remember what I clicked on, to be honest! Anyway, having done that, it has subsequently done everything I have asked of it quietly and efficiently! I have Windows Vista Home Premium and the inbuilt software does all that is necessary to keep an updated record of all the files I want to preserve. (I chose the Windows default list) I considered downloading SyncToy for instance, and also the software on the disk which came with Freecom - but eventually decided that the stuff I had available already was capable of saving all the files I need - and doing so by adding/deleting only that which is new each time. So, it's nice and easy, the alloy case disperses heat satisfactorily (I switch it on only to suit the programmable time of updating) it never seems to get hot, it's almost inaudible to me and I can't think of any downside to this at all!
OK FOR SIX MONTHS - THEN CRAAASH April 25, 2008 Vid Man (UK) 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
Worked OK for about six months, then one day it decided to start turning itself off for no apparent reason! Really helpful when editing a video project and you stand to lose several weeks work. Avoid it like the plague - just not up to the job.
