4 out of 5 stars Great for an SLR first time buyer   September 5, 2008
Mr. R. H. Barnes (London)
Very decent entry level camera and superb value for money.

My only reason not to give this is a higher rating is that the lens is not brilliant as is an all rounder so not great for very close ups, and not as great at landscapes as some other wide angle lenses i've used.

Would definitely recommend this to someone buying their first DSLR as it's really easy to use and tweak settings to suit your preferences very easily.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Camera - Buy It Now   August 29, 2008

Had one of these for about 4 months now and it has never disappointed. . Comfortable to use, brilliant set of features, does everything you would expect and more. . .

Image stabilisation is on-camera, not on-lens like others, so this keeps the cost of add on lenses down, its high ISO pictures are remarkable, and the Dynamic Range Optimisation really pulls detail out of the shadows.

Plus as its Minolta fitting, ebay is full of quality second-hand lenses. It takes fantastic pictures and gives you so much control over the whole process.

I do have a small wish-list. .It would be nice if the remote was wireless, and bundled with the camera. Also depth of field preview would be nice. . . but these are only small points and in no way detract from how sweet this SLR is.

If you use ebay, you can get a protective film at the correct size for the LCD for a few pounds. You may even be able to get them here on Amazon. A friend recommended this to me, as I found that my nose was smearing the LCD as I was taking pictures. . They are fantastic, and stick on by some form of surface tension, so do not use adhesive. They wipe clean so easily, and if you ever sell your camera, you just peel the film off to reveal a pristine LCD.

I also got a great Tamron Zoom lens off Amazon for about 70 quid and it really takes great shots.

In conclusion I would say that the Alpha 200 is a marvellous bit of kit, that does all it promises, at a price that makes it nigh on impossible to ignore if you are in the market for an SLR that will do all you want right out of the box. Add a telephoto lens and a decent tripod, and you have a sweet setup that will last you years.

4 out of 5 stars Love at first sight   August 25, 2008

This sony was purchased as an upgrade from pentax k110d, here follows my impressions after a couple of days:

1- good construction, better than canon, not as good as pentax.
2- faster focus than pentax k110.
3- shutter sound quieter than k110 (not so quiet though)
4- lovely image quality (I sharpened it slightly in camera)
5- dynamic range optimizer is great.
6- steady shot very useful.
7- relatively easy access to menu.
8- good ergonomics, pleasant to operate.
9- kit lens reach a bit further than competing models.
10- no top lcd, but so far have not missed it.
11- nice large lcd, but subject to smearing.
12- good battery life displayed as percentage (very helpful).
13- no weather seal from rain and dust like pentax k200d.
14- good value vis a vis competition.

for first time dslr buyers, obviously this camera does not take videos, nor it has a live view, and it is sure bigger than small or bridge cameras with big zooms, so weigh your options and enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Stunningly good.   August 20, 2008

Just excellent. Supremely good build quality, quality lens included, stellar battery life and full control over evey setting. Functions very well as a point and shoot, but also shines in low light situations on long exposures. I still haven't quite figured out exposure compensation in bright settings, but I'm sure I will in time.

I vowed never to buy Sony again after a shocking experience with an mp3 Walkman, but am glad I reconsidered. This is a cracking device.
