Fantastic Rechargable Torch January 1, 2009 B. O'Brien (Ireland) This is a super torch! I keep mine in the boot of my car in case of emergency. I have only had to use it twice in the two years that I have owned it. Each time was for a puncture, each time in rainy, winter weather. It performed perfectly each time! Prior to owning the Freeplay Jonta I had a variety of conventional torches/lamps in my car. I always forgot to check battery life in these torches which meant I did not have emergency lighting. I strongly recommend having a rechargable light in a car. This freeplay model with its exceptionally bright and efficient LED bulbs is perfect for that job. As a precaution I charge the torch once each year using the electricity charger supplied. I have simply winded the torch for one minute each time I had an emergency - this was perfectly sufficient. I recommend that you purchase the Freeplay Jonta!
Disappointing November 13, 2008 Zoe King I bought this hoping it would provide a permanent solution to endless battery buying. In the event, I was very disappointed. The torch refused to hold its charge, even after being charged overnight using the computer, particularly galling if you're out on your own, at night, in unlit roads, as I was. The manufacturer claims a 30 second wind gives 10 minutes light but in my experience, several minutes wind gave only a couple of minutes. Also, the on-off switch was faulty, would sometimes refuse to switch on, would not switch from one setting to another, and would then refuse to switch off. I really wanted this torch to work. Sadly it failed to and I sent it back for a refund.
No batteries - way cool. August 31, 2008 Bob Murray (Wirral, UK) This torch is superb. You just leave it alone and when needed, give it a good old wind and it works a treat. Really bright on the max setting. It comes with a mini-usb charging cable if you are too tired to crank it. Superb. Trevor Bayliss you are a genius!
The right light February 18, 2007 Mr. Peter Phillips (Pembrokeshire, United Kingdom) 14 out of 14 found this review helpful
I've been progressively spending more and more time outdoors, and also trying to become a more ethically minded consumer. I purchased my first wind up torch early 2006, for a fiver i couldn't go far wrong. It had two light settings, a 5 minute wind would last about 15 minutes of light, plus it was just small enough to hold in my mouth. After an arduous trek in the Pyrenees in summer 2006, the little torch died. So i decided to get another wind up torch, this time better quality, a bit of research came up with this. I managed to get mine new for 25, which is a bargain, i think RRP is 89. There are three light settings on this torch, i find the minimum setting is bright enough for just about all of my needs, it is amazingly efficient at providing light from hand winding, i think i get about 20-30 minutes of light for a five minute wind, but i may be winding more enthusiastically than most. The winding handle is especially large, which really makes a difference, and this torch comes with a mains adapter, apparently it's good to fully charge it every once in a while, but it's also handy to charge it up before a long bout of use. The torch is pretty light weight, 1lb exactly according to my kitchen scales, 453 grams, about the same as a smallish pot of jam. It's a very robust and well built torch, only real bad point is it's size, it's just that little bit two big to fit in my mouth, if this torch could be re-designed to fit in my mouth or have a head strap attachment i 'd give it 5 stars. I have a few different torches for hiking, cycling, fishing, poking about in engines and i do really recommend wind up torches in general. A few reasons, they are battery torches of the same light output, a very modern idea and so use more efficient leds etc. can be charged anywhere, give a really good light for wind ratio. Except for the so called 'torches' that can charge your mobile phone by hand power, they have no battery storrage and are basically a dynamo and an led, can be handy but only give light as they are being powered, which takes both hands and only leaves my mouth for the job in hand.
