2 out of 5 stars Good camera, very poor stand   April 4, 2008
Paul_UK (UK)
Despite promises of a secure stand that can be used with desktop monitors or laptops I was not able to get the camera to fit securely anywhere. The hinge on the stand was loose and the weight of the cable was enough to move it.

From my limited use the picture quality seemed to be very good and responded well to varying light levels. The sound quality from the microphone was adequate though not exceptional.

However after a couple of days I became so frustrated with the useless stand that I returned it to Amazon for a refund.

3 out of 5 stars Good picture - Not so good design   December 30, 2007
Sridhar (London, U.K)
Video quality is brilliant even in poor light
Picture color is rich
Face tracking is very impressive, but this is not much of practical use as the focus keeps changing with the smallest moves also.

Does not sit properly on the laptop. Just hangs and falls whenever I adjust the LCD's position. But it can sit stable on a floor or on a PC tower.
Microphone does not look very impressive as people on other end complain of feeble voice.
Too expensive (~ 50 when I bought) for its over all use and design

4 out of 5 stars Works well with Skype and both Vista/XP   December 30, 2007
BunnyBeak
Replaced Logitech products with a pair of these (I found major s/w problems when trying to use Logitech camera with Vista).

Set-up: a doddle with XP but for vista I'd advise loading driver only initially, then using windows update to get latest Vista driver automatically when camera is plugged in. Then reload the remaining s/w on the disk - 20 minutes work in all on my Vista OS laptop.

Picture and Sound both give very good performance, even on a modest spec. laptop. Face tracking, lowlight performance and built in mic work particularly well. Price and lack of Vista drivers on supplied disc prevent this getting 5 stars from me, nevertheless I'd recommend this either as an upgrade from a cheap webcam or as a first webcam.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Cam   August 19, 2007

My previous web cam was a Logitech Quick Cam, and it's served me fine, but I wanted something better. I am not disappointed!

Pros:

Excellent picture quality.
Excellent audio quality reported by listeners.
Excellent low-light quality. It is even acceptable with only LCD monitor light, and no other light in the room (ok I have three monitors, but even so).
The face tracking and digital zoom are very smooth.

Cons: None really, although I can understand why some folks feel that the mounting is a little iffy on some monitors. However there is a screw mount on it, so you can buy your own clamp if you wish to.

With my previous set ups, I've always had to use a headset, to eliminate howl-round and echo at the other end. The noise cancelling mic on the camera seems to cure this, and I can use this cam with the built in mic, and my Cambridge Audio speakers, and it works fine. No howl-round here, and I asked all my listeners, and not one could hear any echo.

I don't really care less about the accompanying software, although there were options to install it, and I did. It all works as it should, but I really bought this for Skype/IM, and the odd quick snap for a web page. (I have a digital cam and DV cam for proper photos and video anyway).

I don't use MS Vista, so I can't comment on that. In fact my next project is to see how well this works on a linux box with Skype, as I'm moving my network over to this OS.

Conclusion:

This is a webcam. It's not high-end image audio or video hardware. Having said that it does an excellent job at what it's supposed to do. The best I've seen in this price range.

I recommend it without reservation.

5 out of 5 stars At last! Vista drivers are now available.   June 14, 2007

At last Philips have made Vista drivers available for this webcam (both 32 and 64bit versions) Please note that the drivers are available through the Microsoft Windows Update site - they're not for download direct from Philips own website. Just plug in your webcam and let Vista find the software from the Windows update site.
This is an excellent camera in all respects apart from the rather idiosyncratic clamping arrangement. i.e. it doesn't work too well! I solved this by buying my own camera clamp from Maplins and screwing it into the threaded tripod mount in the base of the webcam. Now it's rock steady, no problems at all. Fantastic image quality - very impressed.
