Fast and Cheap, Oh yes it is. September 5, 2008 Chris This is a really great product and so cheap, for less money than a ipod touch you have a fully featured laptop, including wifi and a webcam but even better than that if you stick with the cheapest Linux flash memory versions, it really flies, 15 second boot time beat that Windows. Great resolution when using the iplayer or other flash players. Ive had no issues with Wifi or the update process that effected the early shipments. Just bear in mind you can't install iTunes on Linux and the XP version is as expensive as a full size laptop and probably much slower. PS Its only 200 in PC World, come on Amazon keep up.
Looks Good, Kinda sucks really September 3, 2008 Neil D. Foster (Surrey, UK) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I was really looking forward to this ultra portable notebook but after I purchased it I found it was lacking. Linux "Linpus" looks good but has no guts what so ever (Linpus is a lighter version of Linux). You can't simply download a program and add the icon to the start page. You have to hack Linpus software by adding command lines in the terminal. This is like going back to the old days with MS-dos & if your not technically minded, forget it, Also, programs installed in Linpus are really hard to find. Now, wouldn't it be cool if you could connect the Aspire One to your mobile phone to surf the internet, making this a truly portable device. Ah huh! You have to get the programming manual out for this. You can't even make a Ad Hoc connection. I decided if I was going to keep the Aspire I need to upgrade to Windows XP. Now this can be done but 8GB SSD will not really cut it unless you count & take care of your Megabytes like a Shepard takes care of his sheep. Plus you have to sort out all of the drivers. I'm not crazy about the touchpad & keyboard either but you can't expect it all on a Ultra portable. I would recommend if your looking for a portable notebook and you like this one (it does have some good points like the screen resolution & size), go for the 120GB version and install XP or Linux proper. Or, do what I did and exchange it for a Advent 4221 / MSI Wind. For an extra 80 you get XP, 80GB HDD, slightly bigger screen, great keyboard, good battery & less hassle. I love my Advent!
Updating it broke mine. August 23, 2008 M. Stringer (United Kingdom) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Started off nicely, connected to my wireless network with WEP encryption. A balloon popped up saying that there are updates, so I thought I'd install them before trying it out. Once updates were installed, it froze, and now it won't boot to the OS. I'm very annoyed as I don't have an external Optical Drive to use the restore DVD yet so I'm stuck. I think it's gonna be great when I get it working, but this hiccup means I'm gonna have to restore it somehow... meaning an external DVD drive is essential!
This is great! July 22, 2008 T-bone 83 out of 85 found this review helpful
I have had my aspire one for a few days now, and I am really pleased with it. I bought this particular model as I needed a super portable laptop that was light and easy to use. The acer aspire one fits the bill perfectly. The computer is so small and light that I can put it in my bag and take it anywhere with me, and the battery easily lasts 3 hours when I am out and aboout. Although the keyboard is small, it is not too small, it is still very functional and easy to type on. the keys are all spaced apart and have bevelled edges and I have not really ahd any difficulties using it, as this was one of my concerns. the only kepboard based criticism is that the quotation marks key and the at symbol are the wrong way round! however as I have used a macbook pro this was not really an issue. basically 2 is at and ' is ", if that makes sense. the touchpad is ok as well, a little jumpy at times, but i have simply purchased a cheap usb wireless mouse. it is probably worth pointing out that I have a little trouble with most touchpads, not just this one. the speakers are good too, i have had no trouble when listening to anything. the linux operating system is also great - i was a little worried as I had never used linux before, but the open office software looks so similar to microsoft that I cannot imagine anyone would struggle with it, and everything I have saved so far has been compatible with my mac and my pc. the interface is pleasant and easy to navigate and the processor is suprisingly quick. likewise, surfing the net is easy, there have been no problems there. all in all this is a great little computer, and does everything i needed it to - web cam, skype, messenger, internet, email, and open office. plus there are some nifty games (i am already addicted to the free platform game and the bubble game). I would recommend this product to anyone wanting a lightweight fully functional computer, I am really impressed and this product is better than expected.
