4 out of 5 stars Excellent ultra portable   September 28, 2008

Have been using this model for a couple of weeks. Am very impressed. Screen is small but delightful. Keyboard at the limit for my large fingers. Web using IE works best in full screen (F11) mode with the Windows menu bar auto hiding. Scroll up and down pages using spacebar and shift spacebar. Built in wirelss works well. Have also used with T-Mobile mobile broadband dongle (reason for getting the windows version). Mousepad works well, and even has scrolling with flat finger not as near edges as I am used to. Screen orientation can be changed - ideal for pdf book reading, but haven't sussed out how to get mouse to realise screen orientation had changed. Battery life okay but would like it to be better. Speakers are awful, but headphones work really well. Works really well with google talk. Apart from the three small gripes, can highly recommend.

I'm very happy with this tiny little laptop; very happy indeed! All my software, much of it sophisticated and resource-hungry, works perfectly. No problems installing any software using either my desktop's DVD via Wi-Fi, or using a USB flash drive. Wi-Fi is excellent, with a very sensitive transceiver having much better range than my desktop's card, which is connected to a high-gain antenna! The dual-head graphics is very good indeed, allowing me to plug-into the AV system at work and deliver presentations in any resolution I like, whilst reading my speaker's notes on the One's own screen, so don't worry about the 1024 x 600 limit of the One's screen; it's not a problem. It's so convenient to carry around, and having a large capacity SDHC card inserted gives peace of mind re: backups of important stuff when on the move. This is a triumph of miniaturisation; any smaller would be silly. The keyboard is excellent, the screen bright and sharp, the camera works well in low light too, and I love it!. Sound quality is what one might expect from small speakers; if you want better you'll need bigger and heavier.

I've been looking for a netbook for a while that would suit my needs. I use Powerpoint a lot in presentations and this has reduced what I have to carry enormously. It works well with Dragon Naturally Speaking, which I wasn't expecting, and handles all the tasks I've asked of it. The keyboard is really useable, and the screen nice and crisp - dvd's are definitely watcheable on it, although the speaker is pretty basic. You can't have everything in something this small I guess. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Very portable wtih a good battery life   September 11, 2008

I waited a long time to get one of the new ultraportable laptops as like the other reviewers needed something light, portable but usable. The speed of the laptop is excellent and boots up faster than my full size acer laptop. The battery life is a good 3+ hours when using Word, it was borrowed yesterday during an exercise to type up notes for approx two hours and I was surprised to see the battery still at half full. It also came to the rescue of the organiser when their laptop couldn't connect to a projector, making it handy back up too. The keyboard is full size and has useful fn keys for sound and brightness etc. It works fine with a projector too, making it useful for presentations. Office 2007 is too bulky on the icons for such a small screen, I will switch back to Office 2003 although I did manage to edit a 96 page document with not too much difficulty, you can expand the zoom up to make the text readable.

Overall if you need something for work and are fed up lugging round a full size laptop, this is definitely it. Amaze your colleagues and get one soon!

5 out of 5 stars Just great   September 8, 2008

I bought the little machine to store and manage photographs (using PhotoShop album) when on holiday, so opted for the 120Gb XP version. Was immediately impressed by the small size, low weight and bright screen. Unsurprisingly, there is no CD/DVD drive, but XP contains the necessary drivers for external devices, so no problem (I use a Sony USB CD/DVD reader/writer). Software loads easily and runs surprisingly quickly. Not ideal for internet use because of the small screen size and lack of modem (but can use a USB modem for dial-up access), but otherwise, just great. PhotoShop Album works perfectly and files are readily exchangeable with bigger PCs.
Overall, I just love it. Amazing!!
