5 out of 5 stars Should be 6 stars!   October 6, 2008

A superb bit of kit! I was initially a bit sceptical about "Linpus" Linux. I've used Linux since the mid-1990s, but was concerned that the installed version would be a limited, sub-standard version. I was fully ready to install my distro of choice, but found that I didn't need to.

The machine inspired confidence straight out of the box - the build quality is excellent (much better than the Asus offerings), and the keyboard felt OK. The display is bright and crisp. Battery life is OK (2.75 hours usually) but could be better. I have a home made battery box that I carry in my briefcase to plug into it if I need to.

Boot time is pretty quick, and the basic supplied applications will be sufficient for 90% of users. I've added more RAM (it's now 1 Gb) and another SDD (16 Gb) so that it's now a great little machine for working "out in the field". I've added a lot of administrative tools that I need for some of my work, and have GCC installed to allow me to write and compile software.

Wireless connection is flawless - it was trivially easy to configure for my home and office networks. I've also used it on public Wi-fi services without issue.

In all, a great machine - it's just what I needed!

5 out of 5 stars Fast, friendly, light, cool, great value   September 9, 2008

I've just taken delivery of this new Acer Aspire One (Amazon delivery took 5 days).

Out of the box it looks great, it is light, the build quality looks and feels very good and the screen opens smoothly. It came with 80% battery life already which is handy if you don't have electricity to hand immediately.

I booted it up and went through a simple 4 step setup process (language, country, time, password) which took about 3 minutes. Then the OS booted. It is very user friendly with big links on the opening screen for Web, Mail, Photos, Video, Preferences, Documents etc.

There is no link to "Wireless" or "Networks" which would be handy, but there is an icon in the botton right. You click on that icon and it shows you all the wireless networks within range. I connected to my home wifi without any difficulty (though I don't use WPA or WEP security - I am a believer that wifi should be shared and free!).

The laptop is for my mother and she will have no trouble using it. It is a replacement for an Asus EEE that I bought her 4 months ago. The EEE was beautiful and cool, but it was temperamental in connecting to wireless networks. That's a major flaw.

I would strongly recommend the Acer Aspire One over the EEE. It is cheaper, just as cool, just as easy to use and it does not have wireless network difficulties. Top marks Acer and welcome to the mini-laptop market. Competition is great.

4 out of 5 stars A good basic machine but a great upgarde project!   September 4, 2008

Light weight and very portable. Looks great and has a bright and clear display. It found and connected to my wireless Internet instantly. It has a good office suite and good media players. It played my video and music files without any problem. This is a great machine selling for the price of a simple pocket organiser. Its battery life is short (just over two hours) but this is not much worse than many more expensive laptops.

The A-110 version is however limited mainly due to its software. Whilst Linpus was able to recognise my ZTE Mobile Broadband modem I could not make it install or work. Given my limited understanding of Linux I had no choice but go back to Windows XP. Windows was easy to install using a portable USB-CD player and the windows drivers available on Acer's web site. Windows XP Home (full version) occupied half the (SSD) disk space leaving limited space for data and applications.

Windows loading time and general speed were more than adequate, and not particularly slow as has been suggested. I was able to extend the storage space using a fast SD memory module inserted in the dedicated slot, where the SD card is treated as a second hard disk. There is a second SD card slot and three USB ports which can be used to extend the storage further.

I have since upgraded the system memory from 512MB to 1.5GB improving the overall speed of the system. I had to dismantle the machine (see instructions on Youtube) in order to access the memory slot at the bottom of the motherboard. A suitably placed flap-door would have made the task so much simpler.

The machine is now up and running very smoothly, playing some of my old computer games as well. I love my new upgraded ultra-portable machine.

I have taken away a full star from my rating due to the limitation of supplied Linux and the very awkward memory expansion.

5 out of 5 stars 8GB Linux Aspire One - Awesome Little Machine   September 1, 2008

I bought mine to replace a far more powerful laptop which died. I chiefly wanted to be able to surf the web via wireless connection, and be able to work on presentations and documents on the move. I opted for the 8GB Linux version "just to give it a try" on the grounds that I could upgrade to Windows if I didn't like it. In fact, the installed Linux OS and software is very good, and runs much faster than the Windows machines. I am a complete newbie to Linux, but even so I got up and running with barely a glance at the manual.

The solid state drive is a bonus for true mobile use as it is much more jolt resistant than a traditional drive. 8GB storage is plenty, but can be upgraded in seconds to 40GB with an SDHC card. If you have a couple of screwdrivers and scant regard for your warranty the memory can be upgraded to 1.5GB easily. The screen is clear and sharp with a good viewing angle, and the keyboard size is good. The supplied browser (Firefox 2) and e-mail browser work well, and OpenOffice is excellent - on a par with MS office in terms of function and well documented at www.openoffice.org.

Although the Aspire One is a new player on the block there is already a thriving community offering help and support - www.aspireoneuser.com. I'd suggest a browse there before buying.

5 out of 5 stars Very pleased   August 28, 2008

I have had my linux One for a couple of weeks now and it is everything I expected it to be. It is well built, suitably reliable and in my opinion a very good combination of features and price. Twice as much money will indeed buy you a better machine - but that costs you twice as much, so you make a choice.

I was disappointed to see Amazon slide its release date, and I cancelled my pre-order and went elsewhere to purchase mine. I don't like being given the run-around and it wasn't the first time.

As has been said, you do have to poke under the bonnet a little if you want Skype or Thunderbird or other add-on software. But this process is not rocket-science and anyone who tries to describe it as 'hacking' is over-dramatising for effect. See the well-known fora for instructions to give you access to the proper desktop menu. It takes about 1 minute, and consists of typing a one-line command into the console.

Once you have exposed the desktop menu it is trivial to ask it to install your choice of software from a huge list - and of course you may install any other software that you find for yourself out in the wide world.

You do not need to have exposed the desktop menu in order to run the software update - so any enhancements and fixes from Acer or Mozilla or whoever will be applicable even by those that just turn it on, use it and don't get further involved.

The software (i.e. the linux installation) is appropriate for the machine and works very well. However it does go funny sometimes and you have to accept (in my experience) that the machine will need restarting sometimes. The keyboard bug has been fixed, and the wireless networking interface has been updated.
If it decides that it can't see your network, restart the machine - don't go posting it back to whoever you bought it from. This will normally sort it out.

The battery is, as everybody says, small. It doesn't run for very long. I anticipate that if this becomes a problem I might in the future buy a cheap and large third-party battery pack.

Apparently at some point in the future these will be sold with built-in 3G wireless broadband hardware. Entirely suitable in my opinion, and I wouldn't have minded if it were in my machine - as long as it made it no more expensive of course.
Now, being an impatient soul I have not waited for 3G, and being a bit tight I think I'd probably not want to pay to connect up to wireless broadband anyway... so again, this particular incarnation, lacking 3G, is suitable for my present requirements and I am happy with the price/spec combination.

I have given it 5 stars. Whilst it is not a perfect machine or software installation, it has entirely lived up to my expectations and needs and I am delighted with it. Few things in life are perfect and anyone who wants a perfect tiny laptop could spend five or ten times this money and still be disappointed.

Go on - you know you need one.
