Excellent! July 16, 2008 Tom (London) Epson Perfection V200 Photo A4 4800X9600 DPI 35MM TPU For the price this scanner is unbeatable. At the moment I have been using it to scan the family's collection of slides since the year dot. So far results have been faultless. Normal scanning is good too. Software is typical epson & a little querky, but it's no problem & still very useable. Would recommend this scanner to anyone who wants great results without spending a fortune.
Poor Quality Control July 11, 2008 D. Wakeman (UK) I'm sure the product works well but I have to give bad marks because my scanner arrived with a whole load of grubby marks on the underside of the scanning surface. This obviously rendered the whole thing useless and I had no choice but to return it, how did it leave the factory in this state? Sadly that was discovered after I installed the software, I only chose half the installation options but still had to uninstall seven programs individually! Why do they insist on bundling so much software with it? Finally, why do they not give it a separate on/off button? Instead you have to press the scan button for 3 seconds which can result in accidentally scanning again if you do not press it for quite long enough. Ok, that last one is not so much of a problem but I'm on a roll here...
Probably Epson's best! June 6, 2008 G. Peake (Wales) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
I'm a graphic designer and therefore have developed the inevitable 'love / hate' relationship with Epson products, but I needed a flatbed scanner for doc's and film and didn't want to shell out a fortune. The Perfection V200 has exceeded all my expectations, it's probably Epson's best looking most unobtrusive scanner, is quick and quiet and produces excellent results on flat images, slides and 3D images. Downsides? Well, the scanner is pretty solidly built but the slide / film holder is very flimsy, o.k. if you're methodical and careful but not recommended for the ham-fisted! Also, the top mounted buttons look great but are very easy to press by mistake when you're loading stuff. That's it - a great value product for 'home use' ( probably would last a week in a busy studio ) - by the way, although there is no provision for it, I've also managed to scan my 6x45 film with it as well!
Excellent value and quality for home photo scanning May 28, 2008 Happy Frog (Maidstone UK) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I have been using this scanner almost non-stop since I got it a week ago,I've scanned about 400 slides and a strip of faded old B/W negs so far. It seems to work near miracles with most of them - especially the faded, or burnt out ones - which was a pleasant surprise, as I've never seen some of these images as clearly before. It's particularly good at automatically recolouring very old slides. I use the professional mode, which allows you to select the dpi, the compression and also has options for dust, colour, grain, backlight and focus. It can scan 4 slides or a film strip in one go; you just do a preview and tell it which options to apply to which slide (or select All) and press scan....At 1200 dpi (mid-range), set to 100 % image on the compression ratio selector page, it produces approximately 1MB images that look pretty impressive on my 17" screen in about a minute per slide. Best of all, in almost every case they are finished - the processing software removes the need to run the prints through yet more photo correction software. During preview you can also rotate or flip the image before scanning and saving. There are 2 thumbnail options for previewing; single or by all 4, so you can see what effect the options make before you scan - unlike my old scanner, where the end results often varied considerably from what the tiny preview screen produced. It defaults to scanning the whole image, saving a lot of time, but if required you can select areasm of the images for scanning using the individual thumbnail option. I have had a couple of slides (very old and badly marked),out of about 400 scanned so far, with persistent marks that needed photoshop correction; but mostly, it's scan once and done - so really it's proving incredibly time efficient to copy my irreplaceable family images onto digital media for printing and sharing. For really important slides I up the quality just a couple of notches to 3200 dpi and get 4 to 5mb+ images which are pretty huge for domestic use; the same as my digital SLR usually produces and really bigger than the slide quality probably warrants - in most cases anyway). Other reviews I have read moaned about the on-line software. It does work okay; it's just not that user friendly for initial instructions. However, having used a scanner before, I just did the "blokey" thing and started playing with it! - It's not rocket science; but you do benefit by opting for the professional mode and adjusting the options until you get the image quality you need. I went for a high dpi to begin with, not realising that you get much quicker and better images, by playing with the compression ratio on the final scan page and just selecting a mid-range dpi. One other criticism I read said it's hard to get the slides in and out - actually it's quite easy: put the slides in with the slide holder flat on the scanner plate and to get them out, either just lift it up and the slides fall out onto the scanner plate, or use a finger nail to hook them up. For 60, this is a brilliant scanner. I rarely write reviews, but was so impressed, I felt I had to on this occasion. Being a fussy so-and-so, I was worried I wouldn't be happy with the results / scan time - but as with their printers; Epson have delivered both quality and value. (No, I don't work for them!)
Excellent product, especially for the price May 18, 2008 Hugo First (Bucks, UK) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
I purchased this product mainly to scan old photographs and slides into a PC for safe archiving and so we could see them without having to fetch them all from the attic. It is, for the price, an amazing piece of kit. File size is not an issue. Colour prints and slides are being scanned in at a typical size of 400kb to 1.5Mb depending on the resolution you select. The default of 300dpi seems adequate for most pictures. Some I have scanned in at up to 600 dpi to get a better result. The instruction manual comes on the CD with the product, and you can save it your disc as a PDF file. I don't know if the unit is slow or not - I have no comparison. But come on, it only costs 60. It scans in documents, prints, 35mm slides and photographs direct from the original negatives with some useful enhancing features. I was up and running in about thirty minutes. I have family photographs to look at now that I have not seen in thirty years. I just load the unit up with a neagtive strip, set it scanning, and then get on with something else for a few minutes until it is ready for the next one. I'm very happy with the purchase.
