Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Excellent for the price   May 1, 2008

Using with a Mac PC running OSX 10.5.2 I found this to be excellent and far in front of others at the price. I have now scanned some 1,000 slides using the simple preview method at 600 DPI and am fully satisfied.
A special few of my slides had been transferred from the old 2 1/4" square transparencies taken in 1948 and were in very bad condition. The Plustek and software dealt with all the rough stuff and a tweak with Photoshop and they were amazing.
I damaged the install disc and received a new one from Germany in 3 days free of charge. So excellent after sales too.

3 out of 5 stars Too much hassle   April 24, 2008

I had real problems getting this to work reliably, many times the device wouldn't be detected and wouldn't scan anything. The software included is rather confusing as you're not sure what program to use. The multi-exposure facility works great when it does work, got it to work on a slide and the results were very good. Tried it on a print and the image was a mixed up mess of multiple scans!
I thought this 7300 came with dust removal like the 7200i but I was wrong and you really need this for slides and negatives as I think the LED light magnifies the dust.
When the device works, you can get some great looking scans out of it for the price, but I spent too much time trying to get it to work so I took it back to the shop.

4 out of 5 stars Works well - but not perfect   March 29, 2008

I'm working my way through scanning a lifetime of slides - over 2500. The 7300 does a workman like job using 'Quickscan' which gives little control over the final result. 'Intelliscan' is far too complex and long winded. I've used it a few times and simply gave up.

'Quickscan' results are fine, but may appear to lack contrast and depth. Remember that the amount of detail and colour in a slide is absolutely enormous, and (I'm sure)no electronic scan will ever capture the full depth of the original slide - at least, not at this sort of price.

I'm fortunate that I have software that came with my Nikon digital SLR that allows me to 'add contrast'. This improves 90% of the scans, but some don't respond.

The scanner is well built, and seems tough. The slide and negative carriers seem robust enough to last a long time.

To sum up: An excellent scanner, but don't expect to capture 100% of the full glory of your old slides.

One tip: Be sure to do regular back up of your scans. Scanning is a slow process - especially if you have a lot to do - and you'll want to know the time and effort isn't wasted if your computer fails.
