2 out of 5 stars great sound - but pretty uncomfortable   November 17, 2008

these things have a great sound but i find it really hard to wear them for more than an hour. When i take them out its such a relief!

I've gone through several different brands of sound canceling earphone, but i've never spent so much before and i am pretty disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Speechless.....save up, borrow, beg or steal but buy a pair now!   October 11, 2008

After much deliberation, and hours spent reviewing in-ear monitors for my 32Gb Ipod Touch, I finally took the plunge and bought the Super.Fi 5 Pro in black, and boy am I happy I did.

I had narrowed my choices down to Shure SE420's, UE's Triple.fi 10 and a new brand called Sleek Audio who have released a model called the SA62's. I am not an Audiophile, but really appreciate clear, vibrant and powerful music so I had to fold up my Sennheier PX100's and make my choice.

Naturally these models each hit a different pricepoint, and therefore I chose on the bang per buck basis. The previous reviews on Amazon kind of reaffirmed what I thought, and that was that UE's range offered studio quality, great customer service and although not a budget model, their Super.Fi 5 Pro's seemed to be the best match.

Everything you need comes in box, with a wide range of different sleeves, and foam covers, 3.5" jack etc. I tried the pre-fitted mid-size sleeves and thought I had the best fit possible, that was until I replaced them with the foam sleeves, which although they feel cheap do a much better job, as they expand to fit your canal and completely remove any outside noise. The choice is yours.

So, the million $ question, how do they sound?

Well after just an hour of listening to various types of music, from Ian Brown to Faithless, Radiohead, Elbow and Foo Fighters I am lost for words, they are truly stunning and I will never look back. I can only imagine what their custom IEM's sound like.

Don't worry about not having enough bass, as there is bucketloads. I will update this review once I have tried them with my Arcam Solo Movie to see whether there is any difference from 256kbp Mp3 over CD - I expect there will be :)

These IEM's are streets ahead of my admittedly high expectations, buy them now and see what you've missed out on.

Thanks for reading,

Chris

4 out of 5 stars Outstanding but perhaps not worth the money in these difficult times...   October 2, 2008
G (Lancashire, UK)
I've bought these as an upgrade for my Sennheiser CX300's and Sony MDR-EX71SL's, both of which are fine, but these Super Fi 5 Pros are undoubtedly the best earphones I've ever used. I was also considering the Shure SE310's but opted for the UE's on the strength of other user reviews here. In agreement with the majority of these reviews, the depth and clarity of sound is amazing - it really is like listening to your music for the first time!

Few niggles, though. The law of diminishing returns applies - while they do sound fantastic, they are very expensive (however, having bought them & paid off the credit card, I am glad I did). Also, the body of the phones are plastic - not necessarily a bad thing in terms of weight, I suppose, but for this price range aluminium would give a more quality finish and higher perception of value. The junction of the left & right cables is also plastic and although apparently sturdy, it again seems a little cheap. Still, not the end of the world, that. I would hope this means they didn't skimp on the actual workings though!

Finally, the inclusion of clear plastic wiring with black ear pieces strikes me as weird, especially as you can buy a black replacement - why not just bundle the black 'phones with black wiring? In for a penny, in for a pound, I've also bought the black wires and they do look MUCH better. Frustrating but perhaps I'm just too fussy.

In short, I really can't fault the sound reproduction - for in-ear buds they are outstanding (I'd love to hear the Triple Fi models - they must sound like the band's in your head!) but unless you really want to spoil yourself, think long and hard before you buy.

PS. Don't bother with them if your music is encoded in a low bitrate - all you'll hear is compression artefacts in hi-fidelity. Also, if your audio player has a volume limiter, set it no higher than say 75% of the total volume - these phones are loud!

5 out of 5 stars Stunning!!   September 17, 2008

Like many on here ive been through loads of in ear monitors (V-moda, senn's, denons, sony's...) and although some were'nt bad I always suspected I was missing out. As I spend most my spare time listening to music I thought I owed it to myself, and my collection, to go that extra few quid. How right I was. Its this simple, if you love your music just press the buy button right now. You'll wish, like me, you had of ages ago. Ive had them for a week and in this time I havent turned my telly on once.

That great music collection you've invested so much time and money on, well chances are you havent heard the half of yet (unless your lucky enough to have a high end system.) Im no audiophile really, but you dont have to be to know that these are that good, and also to know what you've been missing. As for the triple fi's, the mind boggles.

Im a techno dj but listen to rock, soul, funk, reggae and even some country and they handle all of these beautifully. I love the clear seperation between the instruments. Every detail is easily identified with no muddling at all. I have Stevie Wonders "living for the city" on now and the bass line is giving me goose bumps. I could go on.

This might sound a bit over the top but im just so chuffed to bits with these. Treat yourself with confidence, it'll be the best 115 you ever spent on yourself. I very much doubt there'll be any regrets.
