Terrible support September 4, 2007 I. Beveridge 10 out of 11 found this review helpful
The laptop itself is ok. It took 2 hours to set up out of the box and a further hour to remove the crapware that acer put on it. The screen is hard to read unless you're looking at it dead-on which is an unusual flaw these days. What really got me though was their support. The disk failed after 6 months and I sent it back for repair. The replaced the drive and destroyed the old one, losing many videos of my son growing up. When I phoned to complain, they said that it would have cost 160 to *prevent* them from destroying my hard drive. This is nothing short of blackmail, or it would have been if they'd actually remembered to give me that option when I originally reported the fault. Absolutely sickening.
A good machine for the price - but choose your OS wisely August 2, 2007 Ian Wild (Worcestershire, UK) 6 out of 7 found this review helpful
Dafydd and Mr Ryder, Why not install Ubuntu like I did (or, credit where it is due, my eldest lad did). Do this and the machine runs very well. The only problem I have had (and hence the 4 stars, but the problem is the OS, I think, rather than the hardware) is that slide shows don't work properly in Presentation. The large display is very good (my eyes are not what they were and the display is the main reason why I chose this machine) and the keyboard is nice to use (unlike some quite appalling laptop keyboards I have experienced in my time). I've no gripes, no regrets and would recommend this laptop.
Running like a dog July 27, 2007 Mr. T. P. Ryder (UK) 11 out of 12 found this review helpful
Daffyd, Of course it will run like a dog. Whilst it's got 1 GB of ram, the video card pinches half of that. To improve perfrmance: 1 Turn off aero (the nice glass effects in vista) if they're running. 2 Decrease the amount of ram available to the graphics cars to either 256MB or 128MB. With any luck, this will double the speed. Failing that, put Windows XP on it. Hope this helps.
Runs like a Dog withVista on it even with 1G of ram!!!! June 14, 2007 Dafydd L. Williams 36 out of 43 found this review helpful
I have recently bought this laptop and although on paper the spec looks good and physically I have no problems with it , good screen , keyboard etc. It runs like a Dog with Vista and I have the version with 1G of memory!! I can only think that it is the operating system that is slowing this machine down so much . I am at the point now that I am going to install XP on it as I cant stand the slowness of Vista anymore. If you want to use this machine for anything serious don't buy it with Vista on it.
