4 out of 5 stars Do you already have a GRAPHICS PROGRAM?   July 5, 2008

Great first Tablet BUT, if you already have a graphics program I would consider the regular Bamboo. It only comes with trial software, but looks like it might be a slightly better product (it has a stand, and navigation buttons?)
This is the advice that I wish I'd had!
However, if you are looking for a package with a simple fun graphic program then this one is for you! :)
It's really a lovely little product, and so much better than a mouse!

5 out of 5 stars Great product, great price   June 17, 2008

This is my first tablet, so I was a little unsure of what to expect. I ordered it quite wearily as others said that it tended to draw in a straight line and i wanted to create smooth digital drawings with my mac. But i wanted to test the water so to speak as to whether or not i wanted to go into digital drawing. I decided to order and i am so pleased i did and i havn't stopped playing with it!

For starters, it makes the navigation of your machine alot more quicker and easier... i'm going to get one for my Dad as he is a full-time exhibition designer and it will make his work alot more easier.

Secondly, it is a brilliant first time tablet... the tutorial is quick and really helps you to get going. The first drawing I did with it turned out alot better than i had expected and i hope to get better with practice. I've always been a traditionalist at heart and have much preferred using good old graphite and rubber. However this tablet has changed my opinion and i now appreciate digital drawing more than i used to.

The free software that comes with it is excellent as well... not as professional as photo-shop obviously, but it is great for practicing and i can imagine is probably really good for the graphic designers out there.

As for my worries about it drawing in a straight line... it only does this when i draw very fast or if i have the internet on and its loading a page. But I barely notice it. I was also worried about the size of the surface... but it matches with my screen perfectly and is easy to draw with. The size is also brilliant if you have a laptop because it is easy and light to carry around with you.

The only criticism i really have about it is the connection lead from the actual tablet to the computer. Where the lead joins into the tablet feels rather flimsy. So i will put something around the connection to make it stronger.

Overall, i would thoroughly recommend this product, especially if you are buying for the first time. It is a great product with a great price.

2 out of 5 stars Not up to usual Wacom standard   May 19, 2008

I have had Wacom graphics tablets before. My last was Graphire 3. So when I bought a laptop I naturally looked for a similarly priced Wacom tablet to go with that. Bamboo seemed to have replaced the Graphire at that price point so I bought one. Highly disappointed. The smooth perspex covering of the Graphire has been replaced with a horrible cheap flip-over flexible plastic sheet. This gives the pen a "gritty" feeling in use. The surface of the tablet itself has the same gritty texture. This also makes the pen tip feel soft and spongy in operation so it often takes several "clicks" to activate something on the screen. Taps on the are now no longer nice hard clicks or taps but a soft spongy clunk. I would agree with another reviewer that the pen doesn't feel as accurate, but this is probably mostly down to the horrible surface texture of the tablet. Have persevered to like this tablet but I just don't, so it's going on eBay and I'll be looking for a 2nd user Graphire 3 which I love. Shame.

5 out of 5 stars LOVE IT!!!   May 14, 2008

Firstly, I'm a full time graphic designer. I work on a mac and I use various pro design tools. I'd had a go on a friends wacom tablet before but the huge price tag put me off. When a friend tipped me off about the new Bamboo, I couldn't resist at a price like that. It's made by Wacom so the quality is all there. I thought about getting the Bamboo fun, but unlike the US version the UK version doesn't come with a mouse so it's not quite as good a buy. But it's still great value even without a mouse. If you want the extra button on the top of the pen (eraser) then go for the fun version - but it will cost you double the bamboo one. I figured I didn't need the extra buttons (i don't) so i went for the cheaper bamboo one.

As far as the bamboo one goes, the feel is amazing. Even the packaging is cool. The wacom website plays down the bamboo one as though it were a kids toy but it's certainly not. The preferences section gives you loads of options, and is particularly good for setting the buttons to different actions. You'll want to change one of the buttons to undo - you'll be using this a lot if you're sketching.

You can use the bamboo one like a mouse for navigating around the screen - it stretches the tablet to fit whatever screen you have (again you can fiddle with the preferences) and it's a delight to use. If you've never used one before it will feel a bit strange at first but after half an hour you'll wonder how you ever lived without it.

If you're mulling over whether or not to get one, then mull no more. Although the pad doesn't have the extra navigation buttons as the fun version, it's a really nice clean and uncluttered design. I can't recommend the Bamboo One enough.
