Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
A strategy game of skill and cunning. Twist and turn the wheels to get your own coloured counters from the top to the bottom first. One false move could lead to your downfall.

2 out of 5 stars Downfall, it has.   December 30, 2008
D. Galgo (UK)
I bought this game for my kids this Christmas and I must say I was dissapointed that it seemed to have changed out of all recognition. It used to be something you could take out of the box, snap the base on and start playing, now you have fiddly cogs to put together, a very flimsy base which means it's knocked over easily, and a key to turn the cogs with. What was wrong with the knobs on the old one?
However, much like one of the other reviewers, one set of counters were missing from the box. It seems like MB need to review either their quality control, or their production line. I took mine back to the shop and as they had sold out I got a refund. I came here to order another one as it was a Christmas present, but I think I'll try and persuade the kids into having something else instead.

4 out of 5 stars Good Strategy game for two Players.   December 7, 2008
FAMOUS NAME (UNITED KINGDOM)

'Downfall' is a great idea for a game, but can be problematic, since often when turning the various wheels, the counters do not 'drop' into the cavities as they should without a little help. This makes it doubly difficult to play, since at times they won't 'drop' because the wheels are not quite lined-up - which in that scenario is how it is meant to be, but distinguishing the difference between these two very different situations is tricky to say the least - get it wrong once, and the game is spoilt... That apart though, it's a good and quite absorbing game for two Players.

NOTE: This Review is for the older version of this game, but we understand that nothing has changed other than the colour and look of the parts. From other Reviews we have read, it would appear that the 'newer' version shown is still as 'problemtatic' the areas we have highlighted.

4 out of 5 stars Good fun   September 5, 2008

We got this as a standby for a holiday in case it was wet. We ended up playing it quite a bit. Ok, it's a little bit flimsy but it's not that bad and nothing has broken off.

Some of the parts are a bit difficult to assemble when you put it together but no real problem.

As a game it is quite good fun and it's often impossible to tell who will win until the last few moves. The children enjoyed it - which is the acid test.

Cheap fun!

2 out of 5 stars Reasonable to play, poor build quality   December 24, 2007

I enjoyed playing this game as a child and now that I have children of my own have introduced them to it.

The idea of the game is good, very visual and mechanical and encourages the players to think ahead and plan, but the modern implementation is poor:
i) You will have to construct the game yourself from the pieces of plastic provided in the box - each dial comes in two halves that must be pressed together through the main upright unit. In my case the dials had to be pressed together so hard (to avoid them being too loose) that you could hear the plastic splitting.
ii) there is no feel of quality or smoothness when rotating the dials in game play - it looks and feels cheap and fragile.
iii) Counters can too easily get stuck or just fall out (the former I recall was a problem with the "old version" from my youth but if memory serves correct - and it may not - the problem was less frequent).
I will be on the lookout for the older version game in future.

On the upside: an extra twist with the newer version of the game is that a couple of the dials can be replaced with dials with fewer holes on one side thus giving one player a handicap.

2 out of 5 stars poorly made   October 12, 2007

this version of downfall is very flimsy, bendy and unstable. i was missing a key when i bought this and i contacted mb games via email, to ask for a replacement. they would not send me one. very bad customer service. i am now left with an incomplete, poorly made game. not happy.

so, i would not recommend buying this version at all. maybe try the older version, as has been suggested below?
