Phenomenal router! Edit: Warning: Apple compatibility issues September 29, 2008 Dan (London) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I rarely review items on Amazon, but felt compelled to write a short review of this product to counter the other rather negative reviews. I bought this, after reading high praise on various websites such as pc pro, to replace an aging BT voyager router. This is not a router for the technically timid. Setup involves an awkward looking web-based config - however, once you obtain the right settings from your broadband provider the fields are easy to fill - in fact, for me the default settings "just worked". There is a CD based config package which is PC only. As a Mac user I couldn't use it. Perhaps this makes the config easier. One further potential problem for the wifi newbie. The unit is provided without wireless security enabled by default - a pretty bad practice, which encourages poor security in the uninitiated. Still, for the technically competent, however, this router is a dream. Once set up the performance is astonishing - I had not imagined how much my old router was holding me back! Even webbrowsing is faster now. Wireless transfers of large files are very fast and smooth. Very very impressed. I strongly recommend this router. Oh yeah, and it looks very cool too. ;-) Edit: Oh dear. One week later and I am returning the unit to Amazon. Why? The unit has a very annoying bug - after it has been running for 48hours or so all apple Bonjour services are blocked - this means that Apple to Apple networking stops working. Very frustrating, as otherwise the unit is brill. Bottom line: 1 star for Apple users 4.5 stars for everyone else.
Think before you buy August 28, 2008 Mr. K. M. Jacks (hampshire, UK) 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
I bought this modem router to upgrade from my old Belkin G model, to enjoy the fantastic increase in speed(?). The setup disk wouldn't run and the manual setup wouldn't work. I tried it on a laptop and eventually managed to run the setup routine but still no wireless. Another laptop - nothing. I phoned the free customer support helpline to be told the line was busy, ring back later. I did - same thing. And again, got a call centre in India. One hour and fifteen minutes later I was told the router was not working and I should return it for an exchange. Well I will return it, but for a refund. I'll go back to Belkin - better the devil you know.
Great little router! July 19, 2008 Simon Johnson (Ascot, UK) 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
Router arrived Thursday, had been putting off setting it up until Saturday. That was silly as it took no more than 5 minutes from unpacking to being connected wirelessly to the internet. Small, easy to use, good range/coverage and achieves and maintains pretty near the theoretical maximum for my ADSL connection. It even looks quite nice. I will note that I'm only using it on 'G' and not 'N' yet as I'm still awaiting my new PC with a 'draft N' adpater. Not found anything to complain about so far.
Great Router - But no SSL Remote Management... June 8, 2008 Mr. G. N. Lowle (Fleet, Hampshire United Kingdom) 4 out of 6 found this review helpful
I personally like Linksys routers having owned a few. But I am frustrated yet again to find that this supposed new model doesn't offer SSL (https) based remote management. I need the ability to log into my router from a remote location and manipulate my DMZ settings and I don't want to be passing my username and password in the 'clear' over the internet. Mine shipped with Firmware V1.00.06 and a very quick look revealed V1.00.07 was available - The feature wasn't enabled in the new firmware either. On the whole a good product, dropping a star for the http based remote management.
