A great all rounder... March 27, 2008 Mr. P. Stewkesbury (Kent, UK) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
We needed to replace our printer, once again I could not bear to spend 60 on a replacement black and a replacement colour cartridge for our Lexmark Z55. That printer was fine, but to keep throwing money away on those cartridges would be madness! We wanted a network printer, so that my sons could print their work from their PCs without needing to switch on the main home PC with the printer attached. And finally, I needed a fax machine for business use. This printer met all those requirements well, and delivered other benefits too! The wireless networking setup was a doddle, it found and connected itself easily to our router - I simply had to provide the WPA security key. Being wireless, you can place it anywhere in the house. However, as I wanted to use it as a fax machine too, I chose to place it adjacent to the fax/phone socket - again, it connected easily and setup was fairly automatic. The colour LCD screen front centre is a great boon for making setup selections, and also does a great job of keeping you clearly informed of status and connectivity e.g. wireless LAN & Bluetooth. Print quality is great. The black text in documents is actually better than many mono lasers I have seen. Photo prints are quite remarkable - they look exactly like shop-developed prints!! As mentioned by others the software install is slow and long-winded - it took about 25 mins to load all the HP drivers and tools onto each of three home PCs, but that is a one-off, day one, activity - subsequently I have seen the software auto-update from HP's website and have not actually had to change any settings. The ink cartridges are very reasonable - a full set of six can be purchased in a pack with some photo paper for about 25. You can print straight from your camera using Picture Bridge, or from a memory card (insert the card into the front of the printer, see a review on that neat colour LCD, choose to print if you wish), and you can even send images for printing straight from your mobile phone via bluetooth! The scanner works well, one of the included HP programs is Optical Character Recognition (OCR) which will create a Word document from a scanned page. It also photocopies in monochrome or colour. All things to all men!
Great All in One April 18, 2007 T. Gordon-craig (UK) 24 out of 24 found this review helpful
I really like this printer and it does everything so far that I want. My only complaint is that is you have a multi page document to fax then you have to scan each page as prompted which is a bit slow. With that said I don't send many faxes so I can live with it. On that subject feeding a single sheet of paper requires that you slide out the cartridge and load it in on top of the other paper so if you are using a lot of different media then this might bother you. On the standard plain paper setting the printed page of text is very quick and even at that speed the quality is incredibly crisp making letters look very high quality indeed. It has a permanent cartridge for 4 x 6 photo paper so you can easily print out a photo in stunning quality without any fuss. I have so far set up three computers to the printer wirelessly using my broadband router and it was all done automatically and works perfectly. Highly recommended.
Really easy set-up - painfully slow... February 13, 2007 S. Williams (Leatherhead, UK) 26 out of 28 found this review helpful
I don't print a great deal but wanted something of an all-rounder and not something that's so cheap it'll fall to bits in a week. I needed fax, scan, copy and print and thought that having something that could print quality photographs would be a bonus (which it does). The printer itself is a bit of a beast but that's to be expected I suppose. Setup was an absolute breeze - Fax setup was practically immediate - it simply auto detected the line it was plugged into. I tested with a fax to and from Australia with no problems. Wireless to was very simple - had no problems with connection whatsoever. Bluetooth works a treat. Be prepared for the Windows install to take ages though (around 20-30 mins) which leads me onto the only gripe with this printer - speed. It really is that slow. If you want something speedy forget this. As I said though, I don't do that much printing so it's not a massive issue for me (hence only 1 star taken off). Bundled software is ok, bit simplistic but easy to use. The LCD screeen is superb and the keys feel well built if a little plasticky. All in all, I would definately recommend this printer as a great all-rounder - not brilliant at any one thing but good at everything.
