This pointer is significantly brighter (about 50 times) than a red laser pointer and because of its unusual color it is much more noticeable. a 532 nm green laser wavelength is obviously superior to a laughable 650 nm red laser wavelength. And unlike a red laser, the green beam itself can be seen in mid-air in dark conditions, not just the laser beam dot. This allows the green laser pointer to be used for pointing to star constellations (sky pointing) and also just generally look cool as hell. The green laser pointer can be seen at much greater distances than with a red laser pointer. Since green direct injection laser diodes aren't readily available, this pointer is based on the use of Diode Pumped Solid State Frequency Doubled (DPSSFD) laser technology. A high power IR laser diode at 808 nm pumps a tiny block of Nd:YVO4 generating light at 1,064 nm which feeds a KTP intracavity frequency doubler crystal to produce the green beam at 532 nm. This is a nice little product, apparently sturdy and well built, and it served very well in a large lecture theatre (seating 300).
The question is : is it too powerful?
It is a Laser 3B device which means that it is at the extreme limit of safety for general use. The official publication of the Health Protection Agency says:
Class 3B
Class 3B lasers may have an output power of up to 500 mW (half a watt). Class 3B lasers may have sufficient power to cause an eye injury, both from the direct beam and from reflections. The higher the output power of the device the greater the risk of injury. Class 3B lasers are therefore considered hazardous to the eye. However, the extent and severity of any eye injury arising from an exposure to the laser beam of a Class 3B laser will depend upon several factors including the radiant power entering the eye and the duration of the exposure. Examples of Class 3B products include lasers used for physiotherapy treatments and many research lasers.
I would suggest therefore that you should not consider buying any more powerful laser, unless you really know what you are doing.
You should not buy this laser for school use, where it may be mis-used.
But if you want a powerful laser for use in PowerPoint presentations in a medium to large theatre, this is ideal: look no further.
