Bought this little beauty two days ago for the blu ray. I am a happy gamer and have loved my xbox360 upgraded to the elite and then by natural progression and because the hd -v- blu ray war was won by sony decided to purchase the PS3. This is a wonderful piece of kit for gaming and for playing back those movies. That having been said it is behind the 360 in a few ways. Download times bad, takes an age to update games. The controllers are good but charge through the ps3 via a cable, effective but not as quick as changing two batteries as with the xbox. Sony have still to get their online gaming moving, to be honest not impressive at all. The 40 gb hardrive is fine but I also like the fact that I have a massive hard drive on the 360 so I can download movies by the bucket load and keep pictures music etc for as long as I want to so I am not spending time clearing things off and then wishing I'd kept them. I also connect my laptop computer to the tv via my 360 which is great, not sure whether or not I can do this through the ps3. The 360 has loads of titles because its been on the market longer but Sony are now catching up in this area and I am presuming they will be head to head before long if not in front at some point. In the war of DVD blu ray versus hi def Sony won. If you are buying to watch dvd this is the console for you. HD kit for xbox 360 amazing but they lost the war so I am presuming that the titles will dry up for my hd dvd drive. I would not presume to be an expert nor advise which is the console for you but what I would say is that I have both and would recommend them both for different reasons. There are no winners or losers whichever console you purchase, they are both amazing machines and will provide hours of entertainment and pleasure whatever your passion.
Fantastic console, the way forward April 27, 2008 Mr. Nick Dempsey (England) 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
Having deliberated and waited for months to get one of these when i fianlly got one i was so pleased. I was originally going to get a 60gb console and did wait months for an online shop to get them in stock, for them to only rocket the prices, i finally gave in and got the inferior 40gb console. I was disappointed not to have the stronger console but now looking back it doesnt matter, i didnt buy the ps3 for playing ps2 games. Anyway, the console, its FANTASTIC, in contrast to the 360 i think its better than it, and im not a fanboy, ive played the 360 and some parts are much better, in game messaging and the games that are available, but, the ps3 is just built much better. No hardware problems, wifi built in amongst others. Also, the PS network is brilliant, given and accepted its not as strong as LIVE but so what, as long as there is 18 players for a game of Domination on COD4 im happy, i dont need 24 million people to be online! Playing COD4 in HD is great and, with a great line up of games its only going to get better. GTA4 (which will probably cause me to fail GCSE's) GT5, Haze, MGS4, Killzone 2 (all ps3 exclusives). These are some brilliant reasons to purachse a ps3, dont think Xbox has a line up of the 4 latter games near the ps3. I would advise anyone to buy this, you certainly wont be dissapointed!
A wonderfull versatile machine April 26, 2008 Jens Erik Bech (Virum, N/A Denmark) 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
My High. Def. videos has got new life. This machine is DivX;-) certified and it plays H.264 mp4, XVID and more videoformats. Everything in High definition!!! It even plays high def from external hard drive through one of its two USB ports. I have played 25 megabit/sek. High Def film seamlessly through the USB-port. And if one likes a film from the external drive;- one push of a button and it is taken into the internal harddrive on the PS3! This is awesome as all my High Def home videos are in the machine. There they can be wieved with animated icons which can grow as you swipe through them, so you can easily get a global wiev over them-awesome! All Your DVD's will be upscaled beautifully to High. Def. quality. re-experience Your entire DVD-collection as digitally remastered! Blu-Ray! The very best player. WiFi- it connected instantly to my little Airport Express which was on another floor! It has updated 2 times from the internet! Supercomputer! 7 cell-processors deliveres a speed of 4 GigaHertz!(How fast is Your PC?;-)) With a press of a button You take part in global science, when You connect to an array of online PS3's and a University researching gene folding! Bluetooth controle with movement sensor. Blutooth turnes the PS3 on and of in a jiffy even with Your back turned! You don't have to point anyware with a bluetooth controller! Every TV should have one, I think. Instead of the infrared pointers. And the PS3 games......High Definition full speed!-Split screen with two drivers.(buy an extra controller) And a big bunch of downloadable demo games with a hole lot to play-for free! Who needs obsolete PS2 game ability? Not me! But what about the only 40 Gig? Well it can hold a lot, but an ordinary function supported by the manual is changing the harddrive. A 2 1/2" SATA harddrive can be fitted from the exterior within 5 minutes! One screw, and it comes out with a handle to grasp! The menu inside the players beautifull color changing operating system asks:"Do You want to install another operating system?"-One push and it will divide the HD into another partition were You can install Linux for an instance. And You will get boot options as well. I went to a special store for games. They had 2 plasma TV's like mine with XBOX 360 live games on them. The PS3's graphic is much, much better in my opinion. There is no comparison none what so ever. Well it is the first month of me having it. It can hold my music and my pictures, but I have not gotten to it yet. The only thing I would say is just buy it. You can make a million uses of it!
I waited for this for 2 years, gave it time........................... April 24, 2008 Mr. Garry Brown (Norwich,England,UK) 9 out of 20 found this review helpful
Before I start this review let me tell you I have owned my ps3 since lauchday and that I'm a huge playstation fan. I collect games consoles (N64,ps1,ps2,megadrive,snes,dreamcast,saturn,3do,lynx,mastersystem etc.. etc...) The ps1 was class; 3d gaming, cd sound and making gaming cool at the time when gaming was aimed at kids. The ps2 delivered dvd and 128 bit games to the industry- GT3,GTA3,vice city, Final fantasy and games such as god of war, jak and dexter. And the ps3... well.... I brought by ps3 60gb premium on launch day. 550 - 1 extra controller. I had saved up for ages and I have not got much money. I tried to run it though a non hd tv and it looks the same as a ps2 on ALL GAMES. I was very dissapointed and went out to get an HDTV on credit from my local retailer. I got a 32" 1080p Sony HDTV and the graphics improved dramatically. But still the ps3 seemed cold and stardust hd and ratchet and clank exepted there was nothing to even want me to turn the console on to even play it! I have tried most ganes on ps3(motorstorm,gt5 prologue, lair, resistance fall of man, drakes fortune....) About 4 months ago I purchased an xbox 360(premium not elite from a friend.) Every time I go to play a game the 360 goes on not the ps3- EVERY TIME. On the 360 all games look the same(if not better.) And cost less than half than the ps3 versions. On the 360 xbox lives adds far better features to games such as playing online(ps3 does not.) And gaming points for unlocking and achiving things in games. ..... Dont get me wrong the ps3 is good- ITS JUST NOT GREAT...... Bluuray- great (hdtv) pads (no rumble and sixasis sucks very badly.) Console looks like a turbo George Forman grilling machine. Even the 60gb version cannot play the simplest of ps2 games. Games are 10 more in most shops but not any better(and you dont get gaming points like xbox live.) I LOVED THE PS1 AND PS2 AND TURNED MY BACK ON THE XBOX BUT THIS CONSOLE JUST DOES NOT CUT IT - BE AWARE. (I gave it from launchday till now - I am not xbox biased I own gamecube and wii/360/dreamcast/saturn. I like all game consoles all systems- the ps3 has no soul and its marketing machine that will not stop till it cons you into the same situation I have been in. - please listen, I have had my ps3 hooked up to playstation network from day 1 and have given it all the time to prove itself it just hasent.) I have talked to fellow gamers in shops and out on the street around the uk. The ps3 is second choice in most cases, and if you own a ps3 like me then please dont be be offended and please open your eyes and try the 360.....
It's brilliant - but don't buy it....... April 23, 2008 one-eyed Jack (England) 9 out of 12 found this review helpful
at least, not the 40gb version. I can't fault it for what it CAN do, but I do have a niggle about the one thing it can't. Everybody knows what that is, and as one of the countless former PS2 owners wanting to play their still excellent PS2 games (and in my case unable to since my PS2 console died once and for all) I was disappointed to find out that the 40gb PS3 won't do the business. There's no need to troll through eBay for the 'old' 60gb version though, at least not if you have some patience. Because later in 2008 - the summer apparently - there will be a new 80gb model which (trumpet fanfare) WILL play PS2 games, or at least the majority of them. It will do everything the current model does PLUS that so-vital extra function that millions of people have been wanting it to. If you don't have any PS2 games, go right ahead and buy the 40gb model today, as it's a bargain. But if you still have a collection that probably cost you more than 300 to put together, then my advice would be don't take a risk with a second-hand 60gb, hang on for a few weeks/months and the ideal solution will be available. It won't stop there however, as there are bigger versions with Freeview and in-built PVRs on the not-too-distant horizon; possibly FreeSat as well, which would be a valuable freebie. Everyone has their opinion, mine is that I'm a PlayStation fan and with Blu-Ray compatibility the PS3 is THE console to have for dedicated gamers. Especially using GT5 Prologue, which is awesome!
