4 out of 5 stars tastey healthy food   June 20, 2008

the chips are definately better than oven chips, not quite as good as deep fried though, id give them about 7 out of 10 but of course alot more healthier. chips are better thick cut although the thicker you cut them the more they come out like oven baked potato, i have also had no problems using the cheaper supermarket white potatoes as opposed to the more expensive maris pipers. i find a kilo is a plate of chip for 2 people, it wouldnt be very much for four people but this suits me ok. i also think there is no need to peel the potatoes either, this save alot of time and is healthier.

on a sidenote tefal claim any oil can be used although they endorse a certain brand of olive oil throughout the instruction book and ive read the american version said not to use olive oil which would make more sense as it burns at lower temperature as youll see if you shallow fry with olive oil.

the recipe book is hit and miss, ive tried about 10 recipes, some are just too eleborate, the chicken and pineapple wasnt very nice and the mixed vegetables had far too much stock in which didnt thinken so it was very watery, and again not very nice. meat cooks nicely in it just like chips, tender on the inside and cooked evenly on the outside, fruit (stawberries, apple setc) is also nice but not really any different to baking them in the oven just more convienient.
overall im glad i have the actifry despite its plasticey build and relative high price as it can cook other things well apart from chips. its good that things like this are being developed to help make health eating easier with the busy lives we have.

5 out of 5 stars Real good for you chips   June 13, 2008

Chips done in this are unreal. They have that deep fried taste.

And I cook a lot of sausages in mine. Main benefits sausage-wise is: it doesn't splash hot fat all over the stove, the sausage gets cooked on all sides (no more pink bits at the side) and you don't have to stand there while they are cooking.

I haven't tried anything out of the recipe book (which you get with it) yet, but will do soon.

At this price I can recommend it. Don't forget, a deep fat fryer can only do one thing, deep fry, this can do all sort - stir frys, chips, sausages etc.

4 out of 5 stars Great chips - only two downsides   June 1, 2008

Just wanted to say great tasting chips. The family loved them.

The timer beeper noise isn't loud enough and it doesn't automatically switch off when timer sounds.

See-through plastic cover does get very hot when in use.

3 out of 5 stars Does the job but very expensive   May 25, 2008

I bought one of these because it makes chips with very little oil and leaves no lingering smell. It does make very good chips if you follow instructions and are happy to wait 40 mins or so cooking time.
They say it does enough for 4 people- truth is it does enough for two at most. As it takes 35 to 40 mins to do another load its not going to help you feed the multitudes!
Its very expensive and would be more reasonably priced at less than half what is being charged. Its 'plasticky' and you get the sense it could break easily. Its also noisy. A lot more noisy than a 'fan oven' as referred to in another Review
A good point is that it is very easy to clean, even easier than I had anticipated.
As there is nothing else of similar nature on the market they are charging a premium-I reckon cheaper versions will appear in time as the basic idea is very good.
