Slows your computer down May 6, 2008 Mr. J. S. Coles (uk) I've used Norton Internet Security for years and it's never let me down. Easy to set up and use, does what it says on the packet. However, it has slowed my system down to a crawl and I've put up with it! Why for example, would you want to virus check a document which you've just been working on not two seconds earlier which you've reopened. But no more, instead of renewing my subscription I changed my Internet Security provider. After much research I've installed Kaspersky and what a difference, my machine has returned to normal speed.
Regular lapses of security February 22, 2008 A. J. HAWKEN (London - UK) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I have used this product(NIS 2007) for a year now and have been forced to change my internet security because the subscription has lapsed and also due to the fact that I was disatisfied with a number of aspects to do with the product. I also have Norton 2005 which didn't seem so bad. 1. Beeing forced to activate the product online many times. For some reason unkown to me, the antivirus switched itself off until I activated it by registering online. Once should have been enough, but I was forced to do this every week or so, during the first few months that I was using the product. Presumably while I was doing this my computer was at risk. 2. More recently there has been an error with both the active real-time antivirus checking and also the anti-phishing. Both of these have been switched off. When I have logged on there is a warning by Norton Internet security, and you are given the opportunity to fix the fault by clicking on a Fix button. The fault cannot be fixed by doing this as it says there is already a process running. So you have to restart the computer to fix this fault. This can be really irritating if you are in a hurry to do something and this fault occurs at least once a week. 3. If your subscription is due expire within the next month you are continually nagged to renew your subscription for 39. Norton Internet Security shows this as a fault that you can only fix by renewing your subscription. 4. You use to be able to renew your updates manually even if the subscription expires. This is no longer possible as they have changed the format of the download. You can download the file but you cannot execute it to update the virus definitions. 5. The software does not uninstall properly. I was concerned that my computer was still running very slowly, despite the fact that I had uninstalled the software. The Taskmanager indicated 50% CPU useage even when I was doing nothing. I then ran HijackThis, and found a number of Symantec processes, which were invisible to Taskmanager. When I deleted these using HackThis, the performance improved dramatically. 6. I am currently using a trial version of AVG Internet security. This seems to be working fine at the moment - certainly it has given me no problems like those experienced with Norton. Also they provide a 3 license product that works on a range of older operating systems. My main computer is using XP professional, and the old one is using 2000 professional. I think I will be buying AVG Internet security (3 licences - 2 year subsciption, for not much more than renewing a 1 year subscription with Norton)
Norton Internet Security January 25, 2008 J. T. Cooper 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I bought a twelve month package for 49 in October 2007 and now Norton are insisting that I renew (January 2008). They are impossible to contact and now their automated system will not update as they say my contract has run out.
Appalling. Find another product. December 25, 2007 A. J. Myers (UK) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I can only endorse and reinforce what a number of posters have written about this product. I have had Norton Internet Security installed on my system for a year. Two weeks before it was due to expire I suddenly found the package was catching intrusions on my PC and Internet connection every few minutes. Convenient! I resubscibed to Norton for 39.99. A couple of weeks later my PC was infected by a nasty virus. Norton failed to pick it up. A full system scan using Norton failed to find the virus. So, I contected Norton on their wonderfully user-unfriendly website. I was sent to an online chat room where I was essentially told that it was my fault the virus had hit my PC and that I must have done someting to cause the problem. I was then told I could pay 69.99 for a consultation to resolve the issue. I pointed out that if the security had done the job I had paid for I shouldn't need to pay extra. At which point the advisor said 'Thank you for your enquiry. Have a nice day,' and logged off. I sent an email to Norton to formally complain and four days later received a reply that said 'Sorry for your troubles', and that was about it. I have sent another formal complaint to Norton and will wait to see what response I get. I have had to download and pay for (as none of the free software could detect the virus) a different anti-spyware program, which did a full system scan in 2 minutes, found the virus and the files it had corrupted and removed the lot in 30 seconds. Norton Internet Security does not protect you from some of the more malevolent viruses and the support offered by the company is non-existent and expensive. Don't waste your time or your money.
Why not just bang your head against a wall? December 18, 2007 Bob Johno (UK) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I work as an IT Manager. Norton products have until recently been our choice of AV. We are currently replacing all versions of Norton products because they seem to cause so many issues on our machines. We have had numerous problems, I think covering every version of this product. I used to work as a Distributed Systems researcher and, about 10 years ago, Symantec antivirus products were a good solid choice. Well, not any more. I can't wait to get this cr4p off of my precious infrastructure. I am only writing this review because I am waiting for a PC to finish "collecting error data" after trying to uninstall NIS. Second time it's done this... it spends about 5 mins collecting data and then doesn't tell you what the error is. I knew it was going to happen too. Why? Because it always does. Version after version; the same useless, sloppy, slick-shod software. Buy it if you want but there are cheaper ways to get frustrated.
