Good idea - but some fundamental flaws... October 25, 2008 Gaz H (UK) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I bought this monitor last week after reading some good reviews on the internet and Amazon. I first heard about this type of monitor from a neighbour who recommended the Tommee Tippee Suresound Ultimate but we chose the Angelcare given that the parent unit is rechargeable (the Tommee Tippee isn't). However, to me there is a fundamental flaw with this product. Basically, the monitor makes a "beep" everytime it detects movement. This may be fine for other people out there, but there is just no way I could sleep through the constant beeping all through the night and the options are either to have this feature on, or off. The only visual indication of moevement detection on the parent unit is a swinging pendulum, and given that the screen is an illumintaed LCD type, you can't see this clearly unless you look very closely at the screen. In other words, you can't really put the parent unit on a bedside table and glance over at it for re-assurance. Rather, you'd need to have it in bed with you and would need to look closely at the screen to check for movement if the sound is off. I don't think this is very practical. As a result, I've returned the item and have ordered the Tommee Tippee instead. It uses a green light that flashes continually, which may not look as fancy, but is certainly a better fit for purpose.
Great Item September 20, 2008 Julie Lowe 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I bought this baby monitor after reading into all the others available. I really wanted a video monitor but as we have wireless internet & telephones I was concerned re the interference. I am so glad I went for this monitor. The pad monitor is great. It is ressuring to know that with a small bleep every few seconds you know baby is ok, easier than staring at a video monitor. When the parent unit is switched off the pad still works & a loud alarm sounds if no movement (breathing) is found. I have used this in both a moses basket & now in the cot. I have had no problem with interference from wireless internet or phones & the range is great too. Would recommend for value & peace of mind. I paid 60 on Amazon Blooming Marvellous are selling for 80!!!!
very happy with this monitor September 6, 2008 suzanne_vet (UK) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
We bought this monitor because for us, it ticked all the boxes: sound monitor, temperature gauge, nightlight and a movement sensor which for us really has been peace of mind. As a new parent you're paranoid about your baby breathing- this allows you to easily see either with a blinking light on the bed unit or a pendulum icon on the parent unit. Our initial unit (from kiddicare.co.uk) had problems with the display on the parent unit- I think just a loose connection to the illumination as it worked otherwise - but our replacement unit works completely fine. Unlike other reviewers we've had no problems with the parent unit charging and the temperature gauge seems to be reliable. The sensor really does work - we tested it with weight only and it does need to detect movement or it sets off the alarm. We've had to learn to turn it off quickly when doing 3am nappy changes but it does give you a warning beep after 20 seconds before setting off a very audible alarm All in all we're really happy with it. We're just trying to find the instructions again so we can use it as a sound-only monitor during the day when LO is not in his bed
Peace of Mind September 1, 2008 The Village Green Preservation Society (Heavenly Devon) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
The angelcare baby monitor provides real peace of mind. It monitors sound, movement and temperature. As a new first time Mum it allowed me to go to sleep safe in the knowledge that I would be woken if there were any problems. You can adjust the sensitivity of the unit and the temperature range. I give it 5 stars for this reason - it is a brilliant product which has given me peace of mind. BUT..... The instructions aren't particularly thorough. The unit is set with a temperature range - if the room temperature strays outside it then the unit alarms continually. This isn't particularly helpful. If the temperature is too high or too low in the room then you still want baby monitored (it isn't always that easy to control room temperature - I try and manage the temperature by putting more (or less) clothes on baby). You can adjust the temperature range - but the instructions (at least the instructions I had) do not tell you this or how to do it. Similarly the instructions say that you can adjust the sensitivity between 0 and 5 (or 1 and 5 - I can't check right now as baby is sleeping!) - but it doesn't tell you whether 0 or 5 is the most sensitive! Fairly irritating gripes, but they don't detract from the fact that this product has made me a more relaxed parent at night.
After 7 years of use, this is STILL Literally a "Life Saver" June 28, 2008 Maureen Cochrane 15 out of 16 found this review helpful
I first became aware of this complete unit 7 years ago when my son was born 3 months premature. I was living in America at the time and he received the best of care but was inevitably put on several monitors in the intensive care unit. He suffered many episodes of Apnea whilst in the baby unit which scared the living daylights out of me. Like most parents of preemies, I was extremely worried about how I would cope once he got home, with not having the monitors to rely on. After searching the internet, I found this unit and bought it immediately. At that time, it was well over 100. Unfortunately, my son developed Cerebral Palsy and has no speach. He is quaridplegic too. Without this unit, I would never have slept for fear of every parents nightmare coming true. Thanks to this unit, I could put my head on the pillow and managed a peaceful nights sleep, knowing my baby was safe and that I would be allerted if anything should happen. (We have had a couple of scares but thankfully the Angelcare monitor alerted us in time)!! We first used a moses basket with the sensor pad, then his cot and finally moved him into a full sized single bed. The sensor pad it situated in the middle of the base unit underneath the mattress and works perfectly. The pad is amazing, it works brilliantly with all forms of beds. Granted, my old Angelcare from the States started playing up 4 years after purchasing but I immediately bought another one from Amazon which had the new features this one has. My old one did not have the temperature gauge or the night light. However, to be perfectly honest, I think the sensor pad is far more important! As I stated in my review title, my son is now 7years old and we STILL use this unit. With a severely disabled child, who has no movement or speach, this unit has become my lifeline for his safety and our peaceful nights sleep. Personally I think these units should be given FREE to every mother when they leave maternity, it would certainly help to reduce SIDS. Perhaps someone could campaign for this from the government but in the meantime, I don't see how any parent could be without this fabulous monitor. I would also pay 10 times the price of this unit because when it comes to your baby, What price can you put on a life?
